Young Bison strong at McCook junior varsity mat meet

Monday, December 17, 2012

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Coy Terry (top) of McCook pins Conrad Bals of Cozad to win the 132-pound title at the McCook 9-10 Open wrestling meet Dec. 13 at the McCook High School gym.
Don't blame the McCook High School wrestling coaching staff for having optimistic thoughts about the future of the Bison program.

McCook competitors lost just two matches in the annual McCook 9-10 Open Thursday, Dec. 13, at the McCook Senior High gym. One of those losses came when two Bison went head-to-head.

The meet features junior varsity competitors from a handful of southwest Nebraska schools, including Gazette area representatives Cambridge, Chase County and Southwest, plus Holdrege, Lexington, Gothenburg, Cozad and North Platte.

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Dustin Payton (top) of McCook tries to hold Jackson Ebbers of Cambridge down on the mat in the 126-pound championship match at the McCook 9-10 Open wrestling meet Dec. 13 at the McCook High School gym. Payton beat Ebbers to claim the gold medal at 126.
The majority of McCook entries were freshmen, giving hope for the future of the Bison mat program.

"We have a really young group here. I was glad to see them have some success," said McCook assistant coach Josh Jones. "I had a lot of kids that had never medaled (placed) before that medaled, so that was nice to see. It's a young group and they've really improved since the beginning of the year."

The Bison coaching staff is hoping a strong group of eighth graders this year will come out for the sport next season to add more depth -- and more quality wrestlers -- in the program.

"The future looks really bright," Jones said.

Most of the weight classes were contested in round-robin formats due to the number of entries.

McCOOK'S unbeaten wrestlers in the meet included Dustin Payton at 126 pounds, Coy Terry at 132, Mikey Erickson at 138, Kasey Hahn at 160, Matt McBride at 195 and Dalton Goodenberger at 220.

Keean Guerrero placed second at 132 with his only loss coming to Terry, a 2-0 decision. Aaron Kotschwar also placed second at 170.

Hunter Mowery of Cambridge won the 152-pound gold medal. Jackson Ebbers (126), Devin Hoelscher (160) and Nick Martin (285) of Cambridge each placed second, and teammate Braden Wasson finished third at 145.

Southwest's Kole Raymer was first at 182 pounds. Top Chase County finisher was Caleb Bubak, fourth at 113.

McCOOK will face host North Platte and Ogallala Friday, Dec. 28, in a varsity triangular meet at the North Platte Senior High School gym starting at 10 a.m. Umscheid said there will also be some exhibition junior varsity matches in the holiday meet.
