McCOOK, Nebraska -- Two Mid Plains campuses received checks from NPPD's Celebrity Golf Tournament and several staff members received recognition at Wednesday night's meeting of the board of governors.

Larry Lindstrom from Nebraska Public Power District and Terry Schutte of Wells Fargo, a major sponsor of NPPD's golf tournament, presented checks for $7,750 to North Platte Community

College and McCook Community College, to be designated for student scholarships. This is the 21st year NPPD has done so, for a total of $219,710 in scholarship funds.

Recognition included NPPD softball coach Janelle Higgins as 2012 Coach of the Year by Region IX, Cathy Nutt as the North Platte Telegraph's Reader Choice's "Favorite Instructor" for 2012; Bruce Dowse, area dean of applied technology and extended campus services as NCCA Administrator of the year, and MPCC's Public Information Office for three advertising and marketing awards sponsored by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. Chuck

Salestrom, area associate vice-president of Public Information, Marketing and Development, was recognized with a bronze medallion for the college's MPCC "ME" series of television commercials, Christopher Fenwick was awarded a gold medallion for his MPCC housing brochure's layout and design, and Peggy

Woodruff, area publications coordinator, was awarded a gold medallion for the college's 2011-12 catalog layout and design.

The board approved the payment of $61,746.87 as one-fifth of the 2013 NCCA dues, set meeting dates of Dec. 19, May 29 and Sept. 11 for board meetings because of other conflicts.

The board also suspended the two-meeting rule and approved policies to change titles of Area Associate Vice President of Administrative Services to Area Business Officer; Area Vice President of Instructional Services and Student Development to Area Vice President of Instruction; Area Dean of Student Life to Campus Dean of Student Life; Area Director of Institutional Advancement to Area Director of Development; and Area Director of Public Information and Marketing to Area Associate Vice President of Marketing, Public Information and Development.

The governors also approved a resolution to continue membership in the Nebraska Community College Insurance Trust for an additional three-year period beginning July 1, 2013 and continuing to June 30, 2016.

The Board heard a report from Robert Beran, a Dana Cole and Associates LLC, partner and Chris Fryzek, a Dana Cole and Associates LLC, manager who were contracted to conduct the college's annual financial aid, enrollments and financial budget audits as required by law. He reported that there were no areas of concern and therefore would be filing an "Unqualified Opinion" report regarding all required audit areas to the State of Nebraska. In layman's term, this means that the auditors found no problems or issues with the college's financial, enrollment, or federal financial aid areas.

The board also heard a report from Kelly Rippen, Area Dean of Enrollment Management on enrollments and student success and retention. Over all, the college had an increase in enrollments of 8.77 percent. MPCC was the only community college in the state to report an increase.

At 8:45 p.m., the board moved to a closed session to discuss negotiations, personnel, and litigation. No further action was taken.
