Pantry drive donations

Friday, October 19, 2012

Supporters of the McCook Pantry donated 9,148 pounds of non-perishable foodstuffs during the Pantry's annual food drive Oct. 12 and 13. "We wouldn't even be here -- we would be nothing -- without the continued, generous support of the people, groups and businesses in our community and area," said Dorothy Henton, coordinator of the Pantry's annual food drive. Dorothy said Pantry personnel appreciate especially the volunteer spirit of the Boy and Girl Scouts who distributed and retrieved bags, and McCook Public Schools' alternative school students who sorted food Monday and helped restock shelves. Each dollar donation is equivalent to one pound of food, said volunteer Fran Allacher, and, according to fellow volunteer Garnet Henton, is used to buy such things as flour, peanut butter, bread, cereal, rice and beans from food banks and local stores. The Pantry is open Monday through Friday, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., and is available as emergency food assistance for households once a month.
