'Sunrise Heights'

Monday, October 1, 2012

The community of Wauneta, Nebraska, celebrates with the residents and staff of "Sunrise Heights of Wauneta," during a grand re-opening of the nursing home Saturday afternoon. After Vetter Health Services of Elkhorn, Nebraska, announced in mid-summer 2011 that it intended to sell the "Heritage of Wauneta" nursing home by June 20, 2012, members of the village board and community pulled together to buy the facility and preserve homes for residents and jobs for staff members. The home provides 38 beds, 60 full- and part-time jobs and an annual payroll of $831,000. Nursing home administrator Lisa Kisinger told those gathered for the ribbon cutting that she had "underestimated the power of a small community with a burr under its saddle," and was very touched with the community's perseverance and support. Lucille McBride, a resident, said that the village buying the nursing home "is the best thing to happen to this town," she said. "I couldn't ask for a better place to live." Director of nursing Deb Andrew said that the village's purchase "was an answer to my prayers that the facility continue for the residents and staff." Lisa Kisinger (left), her husband Ray, who is the facility's maintenance supervisor, and Carol Thompson raised a new American flag presented by Thompson on behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 7028 of Palisade.
