Kerrey and the Norris Amendment

Monday, September 24, 2012

Speaking to supporters in the home of Sen. George Norris in McCook on Friday, Bob Kerrey, former U.S. Senator and Nebraska governor, unveiled his Norris Amendment that he said would end the bickering in Washington. Based on the non-partisan Nebraska Legislature that Norris initiated, the amendment would force Congress to organize in an non-partisan way and have the authority to impose limits in campaign spending and term limits. Party politics are controlling Congress right now to the detriment of the people, he said and gave the examples of no Farm bill, no budget and no Appropriation bill. Bi-partisan politics can work, Kerrey said and cited a bill co-sponsored by Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Democrat Dick Durbin on Social Security, that would, among other changes, move the retirement age back and make allowances for low wage earners. "Right now, you cannot look at any Nebraskan under the age of 40 in the eye about this," he said. Kerrey, the Democrat candidate representing Nebraska in the U.S. Senate, will face Republican Deb Fischer in the Nov. 6 general election.
