The purpose of the summer project was to raise money for the McCook Humane Society. Because a printing sponsor was secured early on, 100% of all sponsorships, donations, and sales raised for the calendar directly benefit our local shelter. "Our hope was the fundraiser donations could be used to help with monthly expenses, i.e. kitty litter, food, medicines, cleaning supplies, advertising, and other things required to operate the Humane Society," said Dixon.
To participate, there was no cost to enter a photo of a cat or dog for consideration in the calendar. Entries were accepted over a two-month period (June and July, 2012). Photos were accepted from McCook, Red Willow County, and the southwest Nebraska tri-state area. Cat and dog photos were also accepted from McCook relatives living outside the area (or former McCook residents).
According to Jean Hester of KRD Credit Union, the project banker, the calendar has raised $320 in donations to date. Calendar sales will now add to the Humane Society calendar project contributions.
"If you like adorable animals, this is a really great calendar," said Sarah Dixon, co-leader of the project. "We received over 75 cute cat and dog photos from McCook families and their relatives including: Angel, Benji, Blizzard, Bruce Wayne, BOA, Bubba, Butkus, Champ, Chester, Chi Chi, Cinderella, Coco, Comet, Copper, Diamond, Diego, Gilligan, Gracie Mae, Jack Frost, Jazz, Jax, Kitty Husker, Lady, Lassie, Midnight, Molly, Moonlight, Mylee, Oppie, Penny, Rosalita, Rudy, Scooter, Shami, Skip, Spots, Switch, Tara, Thunder, Tigger, Tinkerbell, TUG, V'Lane, Windsor, Woodstock, Yanni, Zack, and many more," said Dixon.
Calendar Sales: Monthly calendars can be purchased for $5 each (or a free will donation) and 2013 "A Year at a Glance" Calendars are $2 each (or three for $5). Each calendar will be sold at an arts and crafts fair table during Heritage Days weekend in Norris Park. Post Heritage Days, calendars can be purchased at the Humane Society at 100 South Street, or at Willow Ridge Senior Living Community.
In Loving Memory: The summer fundraiser project donations and sales proceeds are being presented to the animal shelter in the loving memory of Amber Husted who passed away last May. Amber was the former Director of the McCook Humane Society and lived with a firm spirit, a loving heart, and a gentle hand for the caring and protection of animals. Her tireless energy and leadership will be deeply missed.
