Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette McCook National Bank Seniors third baseman Justin Terry reaches to snag a grounder during a recent practice session. The McCook ages 17-18 Legion baseball squad opened the Class B Area 6 Tournament Friday, July 20, with a 14-0 win over Gothenburg.

MINDEN, Neb. -- The McCook National Bank Seniors capitalized on a strong all-around game to successfully open the 2012 Class B Area 6 Legion baseball tournament.

The MNB Seniors romped past Gothenburg, 14-0, in first-round action Friday, July 20, at Ollie Bjorkland Field in Minden.

Clint Beguin pitched a no-hitter and went the distance for McCook, and the Seniors defense was solid in helping to blank Gothenburg. McCook led 8-0 after six innings, then the Seniors added six more runs in the top half of the seventh.

McCook entered the state-qualifying tournament as the second seed. The MNB Seniors, 16-13, advance to a winner's bracket semifinal contest Saturday, July 21, against third-seed Holdrege starting at 7:30 p.m. Holdrege topped the tournament host Kearney County-Minden squad, 15-6, in another first-round game Friday night.

In Friday's other first round game in the double-elimination tournament, Shelton-Gibbon, seeded fourth, outscored fifth seed Cozad, 22-12 in six innings. Shelton-Gibbon will meet top seed Broken Bow in Saturday's other winner's bracket semifinal set to begin at 5 p.m.

Gothenburg and Minden will play Saturday at 2:30 in a first-round elimination bracket, with the loser seeing its season come to a close.

McCOOK FACES a key game Saturday against Holdrege, a team that the Seniors have beaten twice this season, including a 10-run win at Holdrege and a one-run squeaker in McCook. McCook head coach Mike Jonasen labeled Saturday's game as huge for his team, as the winner has Sunday off and would meet the Broken Bow/Shelton-Gibbon winner Monday, July 23, for a berth in the Area 6 championship finals next Wednesday, July 25.

If McCook loses Saturday, the Seniors would have to win three games in three straight days to reach the championship finals.
