Tree removal, replacement, creates dedication opportunities

Employees of Wayne's Tree Service remove branches as owner Wayne Emrich operates a skid loader at Memorial Park Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon. The parks department has contracted Emrich to remove more than two dozen trees from the cemetery in coming weeks.

McCOOK, Nebraska -- As many as 25 trees will be removed from Memorial Park Cemetery in the coming weeks and the McCook Parks Department hopes to replant the same number in the near future. The replanting will open up opportunities for memorial dedications and nameplates on each of the new trees, a practice becoming increasingly popular in local parks over the last several years.

Public Works Directors Kyle Potthoff said that many of the trees being removed were already struggling to thrive prior to being hit by an unusually strong hail storm last fall, which proved to be too much for them. Potthoff said the trees had progressively deteriorated since, to the point that removal was the only option.

For more information or to reserve one of the tree dedications, contact Potthoff at 345-2022.
