Top seed claims title in MMBA Cubs Division Tournament

The top two teams from the Cubs Division regular season advanced to the post-season tournament championship finals.

Form held true, as the top-seed McCook National Bank Red Sox beat the No. 2 McCook Clinic, LLC Cubs in the Monday, July 9 title game at Felling Field in McCook. The Red Sox tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to win a 7-4 decision over the Cubs.

The McCook Midget Baseball Association (MMBA) Cubs Division features players in grades 4-6.

Morgan Fawver slid home safely on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to get the Cubs within 5-4. But the Sox answered in the bottom of the inning on a walk and Cubs error. Ryan Guy scored from third on a passed ball, and Seth Dugger scrambled from second to score another run on the play.

The Cubs put the leadoff runner aboard in the final inning when Austin Kreutzer walked. But Ryan Guy hustled after a passed ball and threw out Kreutzer at second base on the steal attempt.

Justin Barenberg went to the mound for the Red Sox, and he recorded the second out on a ground ball back to the mound. Barenberg then recorded a strikeout to end the game.

The Red Sox won four straight games in the Cubs Division tournament.

The Cubs Division Tournament finals were originally scheduled for Sunday, July 8, but heavy rains forced MMBA officials to alter the tournament schedule and push back the finals until Monday.

THE ANNUAL Cubs Division All-Star Game has been moved to Sunday, July 15, at Felling Field, starting at 7 p.m. All-Star players are asked to report to Felling Field next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Watch for All-Star rosters in Friday's Sports pages.
