The Southwest girls and Cambridge boys claimed team titles at the 2012 Medicine Valley Invitational high school track and field meet.

The competition was held Friday, April 13, at the McCook High School track facility.

Southwest used depth to claim the girls team championship. The Roughriders scored 129 points despite winning just four of the 17 events. Maywood was second with 92 points, just ahead of Arapahoe with 88 points and Dundy County-Stratton with 87. The host Medicine Valley girls finished fifth with 47 points, followed by Cambridgewith 42 and the McCook junior varsity with 24.

THE CAMBRIDGE BOYS used seven event wins to help take home the team title. The Trojans totaled 139 points, with Dundy County-Stratton runner-up with 95 points. Arapahoe was third with 87.5 points, and Medicine Valley finished fifth with 61 points. Southwest was sixth with 40 points, followed by the McCook JV with 25 points and Maywood with 12.

Kate Kelley and Abby Daffer led the Southwest girls with individual events victories. Kelley placed first in the high jump at 5 feet even, topping teammate Kenzie May and Arapahoe's Rochelle Wendland. Daffer won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 6 minutes, 5.6 seconds.

Southwest also won the 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay races.

Maywood was paced by Justine Stone, a double winner in the girls 800-meter run and 3,200.

Jordin Wasson of Cambridge won two events, the long jump and triple jump. Teammate Emily Whipple finished first in the girls discus.

Alexa Whipple of Arapahoe claimed a pair of gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter sprints. Grayce Jorgensen of Med Valley also won two events, the 400-meter dash and 300 hurdles.

Dundy County-Stratton's girls got first-place efforts from Faith Stroup in the shot put, Morgan Ohrman in the pole vault and Nicole Hearon in the 100 hurdles.

Arapahoe also won the girls 400-meter relay.

MIKE SHOFF of Cambridge and Walter Zarkowski of DCS staged a battle in the boys throwing events.

Shoff nipped Zarkowski by one inch in the shot put, with Shoff recording a winning mark of 55 feet, 11 inches. Zarkowski returned the favor with a first-place throw in the discus at 152 feet, 8 inches. Shoff was second at 136-8.

Cambridge speedster Kaden Huxoll sprinted to three gold medals, with wins in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. Kalen Farr of Cambridge also won the boys pole vault and 110 high hurdles.

Levi Swenson of DCS won two events, the boys 800 and 3,200. Teammate Tyler Freeland claimed first place in the 1,600.

Lucas Gleisberg of Medicine Valley also won the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Cambridge won the boys 400-meter relay. Medicine Valley was first in the 1,600 relay, and DCS claimed the gold medal in the 3,200 relay.
