Dixie Landreth, front left, and Sharon Tillotson of the Wilsonville Hendley Volunteer Fire Department accept a check for $2,500 from the Monsanto Fund and its "America's Farmers Grow Communities" program. David Ruf, left, won the Furnas County, Nebraska, donation and he, in turn, designated the $2,500 for the fire department's bunker gear fund. Fire chief Steve Rice said new protective gear has to be replaced every 10 years to keep it certified. Ruf said, "Monsanto has a lot of customers in these areas and it's a good way to put some of that back into the communities through the Monsanto Fund. This is something growers appreciate." Attending the check presentation ceremony March 19 were, back row from left, Ruf, Scott Rice, Brent Ballou, Matt Stevenson of Monsanto, and Steve Rice. The Monsanto Fund has invested more than $3.1 million to rural communities this year alone; more than $570,00 in total has been donated to nonprofits in Nebraska. Farmers in 1,245 eligible counties have the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit organizations. The Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the farm communities where farmers and Monsanto Company employees live and work.
