DANBURY, Nebraska -- McDonald Ryan Unit 276 met March 21 instead of the 14, due to the death and services for Carol Helm who was the unit treasurer for many years, and a 46-year member of the unit.

Six members were present for the meeting called to order at 10 a.m. by the president at the home of Wanda Miller in McCook.

The meeting opened in form, the minutes were read and corrected as the Lebanon VFW also co-sponsors with the Danbury and Lebanon units the delegate to Girl State.

A thank-you note was read from the family of Carol Helm for the memorial.

The unit received a receipt from The Pantry for the recent $135 donation made by members.

Janice Kisker, who was appointed acting-treasurer, gave a financial report. Darla Jordan was welcomed to the meeting.

The president reported that the applications for Kate Kelley as delegate and Emily Fitzsimmons as alternate had been accepted at Girl State and publicity would be released as soon as possible. Delegate and alternates plus a parent are urged to attend Girl State Orientation, April 22, 2 p.m. at the reserved forces bulding located east of McCook.

The sixth grade class at Southwest Schools, under the direction of their teacher, Carol Kelley, will again make posters for the Poppy Poster Contest which the unit will sponsor and award prizes.

The president, vice president, and secretary reported on the District 9 Convention which was held March 3 in Arapahoe at the Ella Missing Center. They thought the convention was well-organized and very informative. In the morning session, a field training orientation took place. The unit received first place for both the public relations book and for the history book. Unit members Ksaren Hodson, Carol Helm, and Jan Collins, were recognized during the Gold Star ceremony.

Special guest was Department Auxiliary President Donna Hatfiel, who with District 9 President Karen Brown installed the incoming District 9 officers: From Unit 276 - Karen Hodson as president, Wanda Miller as secretary/treasurer, and Patsy Lee Redfern as chaplain, and Joyce Peterson of Curtis as vice president. The 2013 District 9 convention will be at Curtis.

The unit voted to recognize and show appreciation to Karen Matheny, a member of the unit who currently serves in the Nebraska National Guard.

Next meeting will be April 11 with lunch at the McCook Senior Center with arrangements by Dorothy Henton.
