McCOOK, Nebraska -- Porter Ross died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at the McCook Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska at the age of 90.
He entered the United States Army Air Corp., serving in Okinawa until the end of World War II. Following his discharge, he worked in the coal mines for 18 months in West Virginia.
On May 6, 1945, Ross married Mabel Wudtke at Herndon, Kansas. They came to rural McCook in 1947, where they farmed until retiring in 1980. Following his retirement, they moved to Oberlin, Kansas where he worked part time for Reliance John Deere as an assembly man and mechanic delivering farm equipment.
His main hobby was working on an old tractor and auto that would not run and restoring them to working order. He was the neighborhood mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel in January 1985; his parents; one brother, Dan Ross and three sisters, Lillian, Blanch and Betty are also deceased.
Porter is survived by his son, James Ross and wife, Bonnie of McCook; three grandchildren, Mike Ross and wife, Bonnie of Conifer, Colorado, Tonia Garza of Fallbrook, California and Billie Joe Ross of McCook, Nebraska; six great- grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Ed Ross of Sidney, Australia, Ralph Ross of Youngstown, Pennsylvania, Tom Ross and wife, Donnie of Jamestown, Pennsylvania; and one sister, Helen Pricer of Jacksonville, Florida; relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with Pastor John Paulson officiating, Interment will be in the Herndon Cemetery at Herndon, Kansas.
Visitation will be at Herrmann Funeral Home Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13, and 14, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home.
