McCOOK, Nebraska -- A former superintendent and a current assistant principal/head basketball coach have been hired as new principals for McCook Public Schools.

The McCook School Board of Education, at its regular meeting Monday night, approved the contract for Kate Repass of Hayes Center, as curriculum director/principal for Central Elementary. Repass is the English language learners, Title and Transition Director and served as the superintendent/elementary principal at Hayes Center, Nebraska from 2007-2010.

Prior to that, she was the K-12 principal/asssistant athletic director at Hayes Center 2003-07 and 2001-03, K-6 principal at Curtis.

Dennis Berry, current principal at Central Elementary and McCook Junior High, will now work only at the junior high.

The board also approved a contract offered to Tim Garcia, as principal for McCook Elementary, to fill the vacancy created with the retirement at the end of this school year of Lynda Baumbach, current McCook Elementary principal.

Garcia has been the assistant principal at Central Elementary since 2007. He has been the physical education teacher at Central Elementary since 2005 and has also been the head basketball coach and varsity assistant football coach at McCook Senior High.

He substitute taught from January 2004 to May 2005, at schools in Elkhorn, Neleigh and Norfolk and was Chief of Police from 2002-2004 in Tilden, Nebraska.

McCook School Superintendent Grant Norgaard said the district received more than 30 applicants for the principal vacancies, with five interviewed.

Interviews of the candidates were done by school administration, staff and Norgaard

Having a past superintendent as a principal is a great start, Norgaard said of Repass, and Garcia has proven himself with his easy rapport with students and his ability to deal with crisis situations.
