CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- A Cambridge, Nebraska, man died Tuesday night in a one-vehicle accident discovered by Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad personnel at the Cambridge lake road and Highway 6 and 34 intersection.

Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Robert Golden reports that Michael A. Morgan Jr., 34 years old, died in the accident reported by railroad officials at 11:50 p.m.

Golden's report indicates that Morgan was southbound on Red Willow County Road 407 when he came too fast into the highway intersection. The driver tried to brake, but could not stop and went across the highway and into the south ditch driver's side first. The car, a 1999 Chevy Cavalier, struck an embankment and rolled onto the south side of the railroad tracks.

Golden reports that Morgan was thrown from the car and into a cornfield on the south side of the highway where he was pronounced dead.

Morgan was alone in the car and was not wearing a seat belt. The car was totaled.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Golden wrote. The investigation continues.

Golden thanks personnel of the Bartley and Cambridge fire and rescue departments, BNSF Railroad and the Red Willow County Attorney's office for their assistance on the scene and with the investigation.
