McCOOK, Nebraska -- The red-tail hawk hit on Highway 83 near Wellfleet, Nebraska, on Jan. 11 and turned over to Lorie Prestes' raptor rescue service at McCook has been released.
"He was just knocked silly," Lorie said Monday. "He was doing really, really well, so he was ready to go."
Lorie is licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to perform raptor rescues. She cautions good-intentioned rescuers not to attempt raptor rescues themselves, unless it's to move injured birds out of immediate danger and traffic. She warns rescuers to watch out for a bird's talons and beak. "They'll tear you to shreds," she said.
To contact Lorie about a rescue situation, call (308) 340-9929.
