INDIANAOLA, Nebraska -- Douglas Clifford Shadley, 61, departed this life on Jan. 8, 2012, at his home in Indianola, Nebraska.
Doug proudly served his county in the United States Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant during Vietnam, and was medically discharged in 1976. Doug had lived in many different places throughout the U.S., including Missouri, Illinois and California.
On March 28, 1980, Douglas married Mary Elizabeth Stewart. To this union three children were born: Ashley Nicole, Andrea Noelle and Adrianne Elizabeth. Doug and his family resided in Indianola, Nebraska.
Doug was extremely intelligent. He invented many things; built and fixed many others. He spent many days helping his kids with their algebra homework. He also knew almost every "answer" on the Jeopardy television show. Doug loved to fish and camp at the Harry Struck Lake in Cambridge, Nebraska. He would stay on the lake all day and night trying to catch the largest catfish known to man. Doug also had a passion for Harley Davidson Motorcycles; owning several during his lifetime. He currently had a Harley Springer Softtail, and he would ride as often as he could. He even journeyed to Oklahoma several times on his cycle.
Doug's other passions included restoring old Hot Rod cars and building model airplanes and helicopters. Some of his self-restored cars include a Ranchero, a Model T Bucket, and his famous "8 Ball" Ford pickup. Doug's most favorite word in the world was "HEMI."
Doug enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. He has two granddaughters in McCook, Nebraska: Sidney Noelle and Reese Alexandria Stockhaus. He also has two grandsons in Clinton, Oklahoma: Wyatt Ryan and Korbin Douglas Jackson.
Doug was well liked and well known by almost everyone around. He was never afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Doug could spend hours and hours talking about his time spent in the Marine Corps, as well as anything that was ever aired on the History Channel.
He was a member of the McCook American Legion.
Doug is preceded in death by his father, Glenn Clifford Shadley; mother, Donna Mae Guthrie; step-father, Eldon "Gus" Guthrie; grandfather, Clifford Shadley; grandmothers, Ruby Shadley and Ethel Davis; uncles "Cork" and Lee Shadley.
He is survived by: mother of his three children, Mary Shadley of Holdrege, Nebraska; daughters, Ashley Jackson (Jeff) of Clinton, Oklahoma, Andrea Wallace (Ross) of McCook, Adrianne Shadley of Holdrege; grandchildren, Sidney and Reese Stockhaus of McCook, and Wyatt and Korbin Jackson of Clinton, Oklahoma; brothers, Marcy Shadley (Carrol) of Trenton, Nebraska and David Guthrie (Lisa) of Bartley, Nebraska; sisters, Jaynee Janousek (Jerry) of Trenton, and Traci Seaman (Mike) of Indianola; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1 - 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 -- 8 p.m.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook, with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook, following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Doug's name.
