'First Night' revelry

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

McCook, Nebraska, rings in 2012 with fireworks and dancing in the streets. Building up to the celebration at midnight, revelers listened to Wilsonville banjo player Dan Cook and "The Saggy Bottom Boys" and Danbury residents Patsy and Tom Jones of "The Lounge Lizards." Getting comfortable for music at the High Plains Museum were Ceanne Rinehart of Colby, Kansas, and 12-year-old Carolyn Cook and 9-year-old Ethan Cook of Durango, Colorado. Ceanne said she was in town visiting the Sughroues, the Helmses and the Mallecks, including Gene Malleck, lead singer of the Saggy Bottom Boys. Singing along with the Boys and the Lizards were McCook's new city manager, Jeff Hancock, and his wife, Sheila. Across the street, Jacob Mockry and fellow McCook Boy Scouts offered "Smores" made over a sidewalk campfire at the Keystone Business Center. Scout Jacob Mockry had to extinguish flames before he could make his. At midnight, Jerry Reitz lit the firecrackers on Norris Avenue; among midnight dancers were Shane Hilker of McCook and his fiancÚ's little sister, 9-year-old Elizabeth Janousek of Huntsville, Alabama. McCook's Rotary Club sponsored "First Night" activities.
