Highway hay fire
Friday, August 19, 2011
Red Willow Western Rural Firefighters work at the scene of a fire Thursday evening involving a truck load of bales that fell off a trailer and caught fire along U.S. Highway 83 south of High Butler Lake north of McCook. Officials don't know what caused the hay, on its way to drought-stricken Oklahoma, to catch fire, speculating it might have been a spark in the truck's exhaust, or spontaneous combustion. Firefighters remained at the scene of the smouldering fire this morning. The smoke combined with fog to create hazardous driving conditions.
