'Smiles are required'

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Central Elementary assistant principal and teacher/coach Tim Garcia tells new fourth and fifth graders, "Smiles are required," as they gather this morning on the playground in McCook, Nebraska, for the first day of the 2011-12 school year. Brooke McCorkle walked her 10-year-old fourth grader, Caitlin, to school. Caitlin said she's excited about going to a new school, having "graduated" from McCook Elementary last spring. Adrienne LaBay, an 11-year-old fifth grader said she's excited about school, "because I like school. I can make more friends at school, because you meet more people." Clowning beside her on the monkey bars was 10-year-old Dalton Stone, a fellow fifth grader who said his favorite subject is science -- and he added with a grin -- "and monkey bars." Other fifth graders, above left, from left, Cady Havlicek, Olivia Hernandez, Bria Simmonds, Jaqueline Beltran and Jana Harris, "moved in," carrying their plentiful supplies of classroom and locker supplies.

  • Smile kids while you you have new playground equipment in McCook to play on because the oldfarts/Morris gang want you to give it up as discussed at a recent city council meeting just to lower their own personal water bills in McCook which you had nothing to do with creating the problem vs the group that watched it all happen and did nothing to stop it. I didnt see anyone from the complaining group running for city council 10 years ago did you ???

  • Oh yea lets just ruin a nice article about the first day of school and Coach Garcia trying to implement some positive attitudes with the kids. Jlake, take your criticism of the city's water rates to a different article. Doesn't belong here. And ochosinco, there are reasons kids aren't allowed to take that to school except in their lunch.

Both of you grow up and make your comments on an appropriate article. I enjoyed seeing my son in the background of one of those pictures enjoying his first day of school.
