McCook, Broken Bow rematch for Area 6 Seniors tourney title

GOTHENBURG, Nebraska -- The McCook National Bank Seniors will try to cap an amazing week with one more win Wednesday, July 27, in the Class B Area 6 Seniors Legion Baseball Tournament.

McCook has won three straight games to advance to the finals of the Area 6 Tournament. The MNB Seniors are coming off a 6-2 win over Broken Bow Monday, July25, in the winner's bracket final played at Gothenburg. McCook, after a night off Tuesday, will draw a rematch with Broken Bow in the championship series Wednesday in Gothenburg.

Broken Bow faced Gothenburg Tuesday night in the elimination bracket finals. Broken Bow pulled away in the late innings to beat the tournament hosts, 9-2, and gain the rematch with McCook.

The Seniors and Broken Bow meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. A McCook victory will send the Seniors to the Class B Legion Baseball State Tournament at Central City starting Saturday. If Broken Bow wins, the two teams would play again Wednesday night to determine the Area 6 Tournament champion and state meet representative.

Gothenburg led 1-0 after two innings Tuesday, but Broken Bow caught fire with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more runs in the fourth. The winners added four insurance runs in the sixth.

Broken Bow pounded 10 hits, led by Spencer Goodman with three hits. Goodman belted a pair of home runs and a double and drove in seven runs.

Chad Christensen was the winning pitcher for Broken Bow.

Sixth seed to finals

McCook, with just eight wins in the regular season, was seeded sixth in the seven-team Area 6 Tournament field. The Seniors opened the tournament with a 2-1 win last Friday over third seed Kearney County-Minden. McCook then topped second-seed Holdrege Saturday to advance to the winner's bracket final and the win last Monday over fourth seed Broken Bow.

Broken Bow opened the area tournament with a 6-0 win over Cozad last Friday. The Indians then beat top-seed Gothenburg, 11-4, in second-round action Saturday before the Monday loss to McCook and the second win over Gothenburg Tuesday.
