'Stitching the State Together'

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Two of 93 quilt blocks for the "Stitching the State Together" quilt project for the Nebraska State Fair depict Red Willow and Hayes counties. Both quilt blocks were designed and stitched by Audrey Suiter, who grew up in Hayes County and lives in McCook in Red Willow County. Audrey's Hayes County quilt block illustrates the 1872 buffalo hunt hosted by Nebraska's Buffalo Bill Cody for the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia. The Red Willow County quilt lists each of the county's communities and features photographs -- provided by the High Plains Museum of McCook and the McCook Daily Gazette -- depicting the county's and McCook's history. One 24x24-inch quilt block designed by an accomplished quilter from each of the state's 93 counties will be framed and hung in the State Fair's commercial exhibit building on the fairgrounds in Grand Island. Audrey won "Best of Show" with her "Primitive Garden" quilt in the 2010 Nebraska State Fair quilting competition.
