'Appalling disaster' -- May 29, 1911, crash left 18 dead
Friday, May 27, 2011
One hundred years ago, on the morning of May 29, a grievous accident struck east of McCook. Two passenger trains were barreling toward one other sharing a single track with neither engineer realizing these were their last earthly moments. A dense fog shrouded the countryside preventing the engineers from seeing much ahead. Perhaps this curtain of low clouds was the Fate's way of softening the transition to an afterlife for those crew who would be killed instantly.
