Bison golfers second at Gothenburg
GOTHENBURG, Nebraska -- McCook High School's boys had four players finish in the top 15 at Thursday's Gothenburg Invitational golf tournament.
Unfortunately for the Bison, Scottsbluff was just a little bit better, as the Bearcats won the team title and McCook was second.
Scottsbluff had a low team total of 318 strokes, with the Bison second with a 328. Sindey was third at 335, and North Platte fourth at 344.
Thursday's event was played at the Wild Horse Golf Course located just northwest of Gothenburg.
McCook was paced by Sean Backer, who finished seventh with rounds of 41 and 39 for an 18-hole score of 80 strokes. Cory Dallam had rounds of 38 and 43 for an 81 to place ninth.
Drew Shields put together rounds of 43 and 40 for an 83 to finish 12th. Mack Alspaugh shot rounds of 41 and 43 for an 84 to tie for 13th. Alan Goodenberger also had rounds of 44 and 43 for an 87.
Each team is allowed to enter five individuals in varsity meets. Bison head coach Rick Haney has been rotating his top six players in varsity events this season. Senior Ben Vetrovsky sat out Thursday's competition.
Haney said his team played well, and it was good for the Bison to see district opponents Scottsbluff, Gering, Ogallala and Sidney.
"They are all in our districts and we will see them again later," Coach Haney said. "The team managed to find some trouble out on the course that kept us from scoring very well. We will need to iron out some of the kinks in order to compete with Scottsbluff in districts."
The Bison will compete with Scottsbluff, Gering, Ogallala, Sidney, Alliance, Broken Bow, Chadron, Cozad, Gothenburg Lexington and Mitchell in the Class B-4 District meet May 17 at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering.
