Bison tennis girls open season with two shutout victories
The McCook High School girls tennis team opened the 2011 season with a pair of impressive victories Tuesday, March 22.
The Bison girls defeated Hershey and Lexington by identical 9-0 scores in varsity competition at the McCook High School tennis courts. McCook also won every junior varsity match contested Tuesday in matches played under cool, breezy weather conditions.
The Bison singles lineup of Brooklynn Trew, Kaylee Samway, Nichole Eisenach, Anna West, Kassidy Gillen and Kelsey Gillen each won two matches in Tuesday's season-opening event. The McCook doubles teams of Trew and Samway, Gillen and Gillen, plus Eisenach and West also won each of their respective varsity matches against their Hershey and Lexington counterparts.
McCook head coach Matt Wiemers was happy with the effort of all his players.
"I was pleased with the team's performance in our opening duals," Wiemers said. "They competed well and played with a lot of confidence. We also got to see some areas where we need to improve and saw some things that they did well.
"For our first matches of the season, the team as a whole didn't show a lot of winter rust. They had to over come some cruddy weather, in which we lost a week of practice (earlier in the spring), but the girls had a good week of practice last week and improved quite a bit."
Doubles teams shine
Coach Wiemers said in a preview article earlier this week that he felt the Bison singles players would be a strength. But he was especially pleased with the effort by his doubles teams in Tuesday's meet.
"I was impressed with our doubles play today," Wiemers said. "We have not been able to spend much time working on doubles, so I was concerned about how the girls would play. They answered the call and really played well together.
"With no doubles teams returning (from last season), we are faced with finding new combinations. Today was a start in the right directions. This will be an on-going task this season, but we have options to use."
Beating two district opponents is a big plus for the Bison, according to Coach Wiemers.
"It was good to see what some of our district opponents have this season," he said. "Both Hershey and Lexington will be district foes this spring, and I like how we match up against them."
McCook will compete with Hershey and Lexington, plus Alliance, Holdrege, Kearney Catholic, Ogallala and Scottsbluff in the Class B-4 District meet May 13 at a site not yet determined by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NCAA).
Coach Wiemers said Tuesday's effort was a good starting point for the season.
"It was a successful day for the girls and was nice to see them get off to a good start," Wiemers said. "We have something to build on for Thursday's matches against North Platte and the Hershey JVs."
Home meets Thursday, March 24
McCook returns to the courts Thursday in home matches against the Hershey junior varsity and North Platte at the McCook High School courts. The Bison will compete with the Hershey JV starting at 2 p.m., with the McCook-North Platte varsity and JV matches set to follow at 4 p.m.
