April 20, 1930--Feb. 10, 2011

CAMBRDIGE, Nebraska -- Claire Marie (McCarthy) Volf, 80, went home to the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 10, 2011), at the Cambridge Manor.

Claire was born April 20, 1930, to Edward and Agnes (Smyth) McCarthy in Greeley, Nebraska. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1947, and in 1948 married Robert "Bob" Volf in Greeley.

Claire farmed with Bob in Ericson, Nebraska until 1957, when they moved to Wood River, Nebraska. Here they owned and operated "Bob's Place" for many years. She then worked for the Veteran's Administration in Grand Island, Nebraska. She enjoyed camping with family and friends, and her favorite camping spot was at Medicine Creek Reservoir near Cambridge. In 1980, they retired and built a cabin there. She enjoyed reading, embroidering and quilt-making. She especially loved retirement, the views of the lake and traveling. Most of all she loved her family and loved visiting with them. This was abundantly clear by the way her face would light up whenever she saw you.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Theresa; parents; brother, Ed; and sisters, Madeline Ryan and Joan Glaser.

Claire is survived by her husband of 62 years; four daughters, Patty and husband, Mike Capps, Barb and husband, Dave Schlund of Broomfield, Colorado, Sue and husband, Tim Grimsby of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Christine and husband, Chris Christensen of Superior, Colorado; four sons, Mike and wife, Penny Volf of Wood River, Larry and wife, Sandra Volf of Loup City, Nebraska, Jim and wife, Kari Volf, John and wife, Karla Volf of Longmont, Colorado: 28 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine O'Callaghan and Regina McCarthy; two brothers, Tom and Pat and wife, Mary McCarthy; and many nieces and nephews.
