Homecoming returns to MCC

Monday, January 17, 2011

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Classes resumed today at McCook Community College and for the first time in several years, Homecoming is coming back on campus.

Homecoming activities -- sponsored by the MCC Student senate -- begin just one week into the Spring semester with a variety of attire-themed dates and a competition between the freshmen and sophomore classes.

For the first time in several years, the Spring Semester began without any turnover of full-time staff or faculty and without any major campus renovation.

The main renovation project is the final remodel of the Center for Applied Science and Technology building on East B Street. This summer MCC is scheduled to replace windows in Walsh-Brady Hall and remodel two restrooms there and two in Barnett Hall, as well as more concrete and sidewalk work.

Preliminary enrollment reports show a decrease in the number of full-time students but college officials believe the number of part-time students has increased enough to also increase the number of full-time equivalent.

In celebration of Homecoming week next week, Monday, Jan. 24 has been designated "PJ Day;" Tuesday is MCC Spirit Day; Wednesday is "Twin Day;" Thursday is the date when students will cast their ballots for homecoming royalty; and Friday is "Wacky-Tacky Day" in which students will dress as wacky-tacky as they can.

On Jan. 36, starting at 11 p.m. it's a late-night movie party in the Weeth Theater with soda and all the popcorn you can eat for $1.50

On Saturday, Jan. 29, the MCC Women's basketball team will take on Northeast Community College at 2 p.m., the MCC Men will follow at about 4 p.m. The Chili Cook-off is set for 6 p.m. at which time the homecoming royalty will be announced and the homecoming dance is set to start at 9:30 p.m. in the MCC student Union.

This week, as part of the return to campus, the MCC Office of Student life is hosting hypnotist Jim Wand at noon Tuesday in True Hall.

The MCC basketball teams host North Platte Wednesday night in True Hall with the Women playing at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.; Both team return to action Saturday hosting William Penn JV in games at 6 and 8 p.m.

On Friday, MCC launches its second "Birds of Nebraska" (BIOS 2990) for bird-watching enthusiasts. There is still time to sign up for the class, which is in Barnett Hall, Room 112 on Fridays from 8-10 a.m., running through May 6. Last spring, nine students found and identified 148 local species of birds through the class, which is open to traditional students interested in obtaining credits, and for non-traditional students just interested in learning more about birds and auditing the class without receiving college credits. For more information about taking the class, call Bogardus at 345-8150 or email (bogardusr@mpcc. edu).

MCC will host Inter-High day this year on April 6 from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and this year the campus will also be the host for the District Quiz Bowl that afternoon from 1-4 p.m. in Barnett Hall.

The North Platte Inter-High and TechKnowledge & Skills Discovery Day is set for March 30 at both North Platte campuses.

Spring Break is set for March 14-18 with Commencement set for May 13.
