NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska -- Iris Belle Nelms, 79, formerly of Hayes Center, Nebraska, passed away Saturday (Oct. 2, 2010), at Linden Court.

She was born on Nov. 12, 1930, to George and Minnie (Ward) Pinn. She graduated from Hayes Center High School.

On April 6, 1948, she married Leonard Nelms. She was the first director of the senior center and she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Iris enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, board and card games, and most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Viola Fowler.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard of North Platte; daughter, Kristy and husband, Jerry Vapenik of Wauneta, Nebraska; sons, Casey and wife, Wanda Nelms of Sutherland, Nebraska, and Jim Nelms of Franklin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Mindy and husband, Ken Dann, Colt Nelms, Chase and fiancée, Becky Nelms, Justin and fiancée, Lisa Nelms, Jesi Nelms, Seth Vapenik, Jess Vapenik, Dirk and wife, Roseanna Vapenik, Bryn and husband, Clay Jordan, and Shelby Brandon; great-grandchildren, Whitney Nelms, Lilian Nelms, and coming soon, Baby Vapenik and Baby Jordan; nieces and nephews, Cheryl and husband, John Scott, Greg Fowler and Vicki Jacobs.

Memorial services are Thursday, 10 a.m., at the Hayes Center Congregational Church with Pastor Jean Miller officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Hayes Center Cemetery.
