HOLDREGE, Nebraska -- The McCook High School volleyball team brought some positives despite losing all three matches at the Holdrege Invitational Saturday, Sept. 25.

The Bison girls opened the tournament against Class C-1 powerhouse Grand Island Central Catholic. McCook played well agains the top-ranked Crusaders in a 25-20, 25-18 loss.

"We saw some positive things this weekend that we can build off of," said McCook head coach Krystal Weber. "We played really well against GICC in the first set. It was a sideout game until about halfway through set one, and GICC just overpowered us from that point on. In the second set, we struggled right from the start with Jessica Wocjick's topspin jump serve and dug ourselves a deep hole that we couldn't get out of."

Kassidy Gillen had 2 kills to lead McCook against Central Catholic. Brooklynn Trew and Riley Allen each recorded a block.

Consolation bracket action

The Bison dropped to the consolation bracket to face St. Paul, who lost to Hastings St. Cecilia in another first-round match. McCook was defeated by St. Paul, 25-7, 25-20.

"We struggled with serve receive early against St. Paul, but came back out in the second set and really battled with them," Coach Weber said.

Gillen and Amanda Fuchuck hit 3 kills each for the Bison. Trew had 8 set assists, with Fuchuck and Trew recording 6 defensive digs each.

In the final match of the day, McCook dropped a 25-10, 25-19 decision to Ravenna.

"It was the same story against Ravenna -- we struggled to pass the ball," Weber said. "Our hitters did a better job of finding the open areas."

Sydney Clapp led McCook with 3 kills, and Trew had 9 assists and 15 digs.

Weber said her team improved defensively at the Holdrege meet, and the blockers did a better job slowing down opponent's hitting to aid the back row players.
