Orphan train program Sept. 24 at Fox

Thursday, September 16, 2010

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The personal stories of Orphan Train riders will be presented Friday, Sept. 24, during a special Heritage Days program at the historic Fox Theatre in McCook.

The program, free to the public, will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Charlotte Endorf, a writer and speaker from Norfolk, Nebraska, will present "Excess Baggage: Riding the Orphan Train."

She will use a full, multi-media presentation to tell about the heart-touching experiences of the children who rode America's Orphan Trains between 1854 and 1929. This includes stories about Nebraskans who Endorf has personally interviewed.

The program at the Fox is sponsored by the High Plains Historical Society and is presented with the help of the Nebraska Humanities Council.

Endorf travels widely to tell the Orphan Train stories, including an appearance at the 2010 Old Settlers celebration in Indianola.
