Yes I'm sad to admit that I voted for Jimmy Carter to become president. To be honest it was a Hobson's choice as he was running against President, by default, Gerald Ford Washington insider and proven dud as president. I was on active duty at the time and looked up to Admiral Hyman Rickover's program of placing the best the Navy had to offer in nuclear submarines. Carter, an Annapolis grad, had made the grade and served for a short time as a nuclear submariner although at the time he ran he had resigned from the Navy and was farming in Georgia. Sadly though Carter turned out to be no Eisenhower a retired General that had indeed performed well in the office of President.
Later that vote to help elect President Carter came back to haunt me big time! I had retired from the Air Force and came back home to take over the family farm. President Jimmy Carter, helped along by a Democrat Congress, embraced double-digit inflation. No farmer, especially one just starting out, can endure 10 percent + interest on operating money. Eventually after 19 years farming, an avocation that I dearly loved except when I had to go visit my banker, I realized that my Air Force Retirement money was not covering my farming habit and I retired from that vocation.
I have to admit that I was slow to learn and once again voted for another Democrat, that being "Governor" Ben Nelson when he ran for the U.S. Senate. I was again reminded of that error when Sen. Ben voted for Obamacare after receiving the Cornhusker Kickback bribe. He of course voted YES so that we could finally read what was in that mammoth bill. The bill that was signed into law was designed to destroy and then replace the financial side of healthcare in the United States. Funny thing though, members of Congress were exempted from having to enjoy the benefits of their Liberal version of socialized medicine.
Now we have a wonderful statue of Senator Ben and his parents for me to admire each trip down Norris Avenue. Then too each time I put McCook Airport into my Garmin (GPS) it proudly reminds me that I have just selected McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport as my point of departure or destination. Kinda makes one proud about like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
Actually I have to cut Senator Ben a little slack lately. He actually voted NO on extending unemployment benefits beyond 99 weeks for the long-time slackers, oops I mean long time unemployed. At his news conference Ben stated that he voted NO due to having to borrow money to pay for the program. Guess it would never do to use some of the unspent stimulus/earmark money already allocated by our Democrat Congress.
Then again Senator Ben safely voted NO on the conformation of super-liberal Elena Kagen 112th Justice of the Supreme Court. Senator Ben's justification for that vote was listening to his constituents back in Nebraska. Hmm, he must be campaigning for reelection in 2012. Twice-burned when voting for Democrats I think that I will just have to vote for whoever runs for the Senate in Nebraska, Republican, Tea Party, Independent or just a plain warm body.
That is the way I saw it.

That'll stir 'em up...
Dear Brother,
It seems to me that as you grow older, you begin to sound more and more like our Dad. Rigid, borderline racist, intolerant, provincial ... doesn't that scare you just a little bit?
Dick...getting pretty tired of you same old comments about Ben Nelson. Pretty sure your slate isn't clean and pretty sure you weren't popular when you were a commissioner....you know...people in glass houses.....etc.
Keep it up Dick! Great article and mega ditto! Virginia, what can I say but what a very sad comment:( Rather than debate the issue, she uses the racism card!
remington81: A careful reading of the comment would have let you understand that it referred to my Dad as borderline racist.
"Obama says religious freedom was one of the nation's founding
principles.
The president held a White House dinner Friday in celebration of
the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. He said Muslims have the same
right as anyone else to practice their religion in this country.
He said that included the right to build a place of worship and
a community center near the site of the World Trade Center towers
that were brought down in the Sept. 11 attacks".
I'm having a hard time finding fault with this comment. While we don't have to like what they are planning it is within their rights. These rights are the foundation of this great country.
Virginia, sorry, but you were addressing Dick, as the 'subject,' then added your Dad, a lessor subject, but more the 'comparative,' and you closed addressing Dick; thus letting everyone know that you think Dick is becoming "Rigid, borderline racist, intolerant, provincial," as your 'Dad' had (Past tense) been (as an:accepted, well known, fact). In actuality, you voice the same opinion, tying it to two people, Dad, and Brother. If you didn't mean it that way, bad grammar.
Good thing you love your Brother, Dick, or you might have really told him what you think.
Thanks for keeping the subject of our country in the front of everyone's minds, Dick. Too easily we tend to forget we err, and then err again, just the same as the time before, only worse. Keep the Watch, folks the World in in travail, toward Tribulation.
Interesting Obama has only done half a term so far and your labeling him the worst president ever. I find it infinitely curious that you believe that Obama has done worse for the country in the short time he has been president than bush did for both his terms.
You know ridding the nation of the budget surplus. Stumbling us into a war under false pretenses. Attacking Americans freedom at home ect ect..
Dick,
By stating a mosque should not be located near ground zero is like saying you should not build a church near any location that once had a Christian murder someone of another faith.
Just because "terrorists" took down the towers and killed thousands of people does not make Muslims any less worthy than you. 22% of the worlds population is Muslim. Exactly how many of those 22% do you think are terrorists?
Dick,
I am sorry that a democratic president cost you the family farm. It seems that most people in Red Willow county and McCook have the same story about electing somebody once, and then realizing it was a drastic mistake.Looks as though you are in good company.
The irony in all of the protesting, is that the terrorists are using propaganda such as saying the west is trying to eradicate Islam in order to recruit people to fight against our soldiers...Then we go protest the building of a Mosque trying to get it shut down when legally, there's nothing holding it back.
Doesn't really matter how much we say we are not trying get rid of Islam when we won't let them build a place of worship.
The only way to move on is if we forgive a religion of millions for the sins of a few extremists that the millions don't even consider part of the religion.
Really how many of thoise millions have actually come out and condemned the terrorists? I sure remember the Gaza cheering and celebrating when the towers came down. The man who is behind the mosque has stated that he wants the US to be Sharia law compliant and refuses to condemn Hezbolah a terrorist group.
Mr. Dick, looks like your sis hit the nail on the head!
Good gravy man we already know you hate Senator Nelson, please put a lid on it. Or perhaps it's jealousy? No Dick Trail statue around here, no Dick Trail Airport.....might it be jealousy?
Slackers huh? I bet a majority of those slackers would love to have a job, instead of the unemployment benefits. I would imagine that since you are drawing your military pension you must have forgotten that many of those slackers have paid into the unemployment insurance fund for years and years, and for the first time are in dire straights and have to draw on that insurance that they have paid into for most of their adult lives. But people like you have little compassion for the down and out. Oh yea, sure there are plenty of them that are using the system, but right now there are many that for the first time are collecting on all the "premimums" they have been paying into the fund for years.
I just wonder if you ever received any farm subsidy check from the government? But those payments are in no way meant to help someone who can't make their payments, right? There are "big city people" that look upon those subsidy checks as welfare for farmers. Guess it just depends on which line you are in to collect those checks. Before all the farmers jump on that statement, it is one that I have read and were statements made by people in big cities. I personally do not support that view, just trying to make a point about Mr. Dick and his disdain for helping anyone who is in need. Where have all those compassionate conservatives gone?
Have you sent that invitation for flight lessons to the President yet? Still waiting to see it published.
I will enjoy having a chuckle everytime I go past the statue on Norris Ave. thinking about that stick poking you!! HA! Love it!
Employers not employees pay into Unemployment insurance. This is the new Welfare and 99 weeks is way too long.
Farm subsidies are welfare and should be ended just like all gubment handouts.
I recall that in those days after the 9/11 crime and our rush to kill some folks for the sin of having been born into the wrong country at the wrong time we were frequently told that if such and such a set of conditions pertained then "the terrorists will have won".I'd think that if we're seen to be so easily frightened that we'll sacrifice our first principles indeed the first of our first then the terrorists have won.
The Sufist Imam of whom Chaco speaks was invited by both the Bush administration and the FBI to participate in efforts to find ways give voice to moderates in Muslim countries.
To categorize this community/cultural center YMCA analog as solely a mosque is as ridiculous as categorizing a Las Vegas casino as a cathedral because it contains a wedding chapel.
While we're ending things I'd surely like to see an end to the revolving door between the military-industrial-congressional complex and the Pentagon at least as a start. I'd be pretty sure that the cost of one of those black plastic bombers we don't really need could fix a lot of things in this country. Throw in a couple missile subs and the deficit comes down fairly dramatically.
Dick I love the comment "slackers" people on unemployment for 99 weeks are there because they are too lazy to go get a job!!!! bottom line!!!! I have changed jobs twice since this economy has started a downward spiral the last time was in February of this year! when there were supposedly no jobs anywhere! The only time I have been with out work in the last 20 years is when I didnt want to work!!!! all you have to do is get out there and find it there are jobs to be had! they may not be the job you want but a job is a job! and with this economy "the way it is" then beggars cant be choosers!!!!
As for the mosque issue, If you all want to call me a racist for not wanting a mosque to be planted where near ground Zero, then so be it I will be a racist, If you want to refer to me as a Racist because I dont like Mr. Obama then so be it call me a Racist but know this as far as Obama is concerned I dont like his white half either!!!!!! and as far as the Mosque is concerned I have no problem with the Muslim religion But they are so called "peaceful" people, then why are they trying so hard to punish the trade center survivors and the victims families by knowing that the very people that brought havoc upon them are getting to put a place of worship so close to the sacred ground that their families parished on???
@Kman I watched the fox talking heads make this exact point. Do you not see what is wrong with what you are saying there in regard to the Cultural Center?
