HOLDREGE, Nebraska -- Funeral services for Herschel W. Sheffield were conducted from the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. with the Reverends Melvin Mertens and Kenton Birtell, officiating. Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

Herschel Wayman Sheffield, 90 years of Wilcox, Nebraska, passed away on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. He was born on Sept. 17, 1919, on the family farm in Frontier County near Orafino, Nebraska, the second of three boys born to Floyd and Edith (Presler) Sheffield. Herschel was baptized at a young age and went to grade school at the Independence School District No. 48. He then went to high school at Orafino, Nebraska, graduating from Orafino High School with the class of 1937.

Following his education, Herschel farmed the place where his grandfather homesteaded in the 1880s. In 1944, the family relocated to Phelps County, north of Holdrege. Hersh was united in marriage to Berdena May Pfeiffer on Dec. 27, 1948 and to this union five children were born. Berdena passed away on March 25, 1967 at the age of 42.

On Aug. 1, 1970, he married Edna Mae (Hinrichs) Lundeen. They lived on a farm northeast of Wilcox for 10 years and then moved into Wilcox in 1980. Herschel had a Real Estate and Insurance business in Holdrege from May 1971 until November 1990 when he retired.

Herschel was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilcox; past member of the Board of Directors of the Natural Resource District in Holdrege and Bethany Home in Minden.

Besides his wife, Berdena and his parents, Herschel was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Katherine; and two brothers: Frank and Leslie Sheffield.

Survivors include his wife, Edna of Wilcox; his four children: Patricia Sheffield and her partner, Brian Osborn of Holdrege, Alan Sheffield and his wife, Cindy of Grand Island, Nebraska, Monte Sheffield and his wife, Ruth of Wallace, Nebraska, John Sheffield and his wife, Kari of McCook, Nebraska; three stepchildren: Brad Lundeen and his wife, Pat of Wilcox, Patty Galbraith and her husband, Harry of Grand Island, Ave Lundeen and his wife, Denise of Axtell, Nebraska; grandchildren: Amy Stevenson, Jessica Stevenson, Chad Sheffield and his wife, Kayla, Courtney Hesser and her husband, Brandon, Matt Sheffield and his wife, Wendy, Wendi Hadley and her husband, Mike, Mollie Akerson and her husband, Adam, Kaleb Sheffield, Elizabeth Sheffield, Erik Sheffield, Megan and Ryan Wilson, Joe Lundeen, Scott Lundeen, Katie Lundeen, John Galbraith, Anna Galbraith, and Jon Spurlock and his wife, Carrie; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Dottie Sheffield, Bernice Sheffield and Dorene Hinrichs; brothers-in-law: Elmer Hinrichs and his wife, Jay, Marvin Hinrichs and his wife, Irene, John Gishwiller, and George Rewerts and a host of other relatives and friends.
