College accepts grants, despite match misgivings

Thursday, July 29, 2010
McCOOK, Nebraska -- The Mid-Plains Board of Governors gave official approval to a grant to increase the number of underrepresented college students and another to help serve low-income students.

The second, a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant, passed on a 5-3 vote, with Glenda Hasenhauer, Roger Wilson and Elizabeth Benjamin voting no, primarily over concerns the grant would require a five-year commitment by the college to provide matching funds.

The first grant, which was authorized by board chairman Elizabeth Benjamin by a June deadline, contingent on board approval, was passed on a 7-0-1 vote with Wilson abstaining.

In other business, Three McCook instructors were among MPCC staff recognized at Wednesday night's meeting for receing National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Awards.

They are nurse educator Kathy Harrison, McCook Community College art instructor Rick Johnson and MCC business instructor Lorrie Mowry.

The three joined North Platte Community College English instructor Jessie Allen in receiving the recognition at a national converence in Austin, Texas.

In other business, the board spent a little more than half an hour in closed session to discuss litigation.

The next meeting will be 8:07 p.m. in North Platte.

The story does not say how much the grant is each year or how many under represented kids are needed to meet the standard.
