I never want to see that again

Tuesday, July 27, 2010
The best description that I can make is to picture a wonderful old friend being run over in the crosswalk by a truck driven by your coworker and good friend. Then imagine that your old friend and the truck exploded into flame as the gas tank ruptured and you helplessly begged your truck driving friend to jump from the burning cab!

My emotions ran rampant Thursday when a big turbine-powered spray plane (crop duster) accidentally overran a Piper Cub parked on the aviation ramp. The Super Cub was unoccupied and the turbine pilot escaped with his life from the huge fireball.

It was an ugly thing to watch! The scars remain today with the Cub wing, fuselage and tail outlined on the concrete somewhat like the haunting images of humans caught on the sidewalk when the nuclear weapon exploded over Hiroshima in 1945.

For me watching that beautiful blue and white Super Cub burn up on McCook's airport ramp was akin to seeing a good friend die! A short time before the accident I had visited with the owner who'd stopped for fuel on the way to the annual aviation meet at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He and a young son had just flown the airplane here from its home at Kelly Air Park some 50 miles south of Denver.

My new friend and I toured the more interesting places on McCook airport while I simultaneously mentored one of my young students out on an initial solo flight. My new Cub owning friend was awaiting his wife who was driving the family van loaded with camping equipment and two other young sons. The plan was for the wife, also a pilot, to fly their Cub along with another of the boys to Crete, Nebraska, for the next fuel stop. In that manner they planned to hopscotch across the states on their way to the annual AirVenture the largest gathering of pilots and airplanes in the world. It was not to be! The loss-stricken family turned their van West to leave the sad scene.

Now referring to a recent column about McCook's wonderful Independence Day Celebration in Norris Park.

I had commented that it is a shame that President Obama did not attend, so that perhaps he could have found a reason to be proud to be an American. A wag commented in the online Gazette edition following the column that perhaps the reason our President didn't attend was because he wasn't invited! Good point.

Therefore I am issuing a formal invitation to President Barack Hussein Obama to come to Southwest Nebraska so that I can teach him to fly.

You see, when getting a new student started in the learning-to-fly business there are a few steps, paperwork, that an instructor must accomplish.

One such step is to direct the aspiring pilot to get a flight physical and a student license. Those two documents are necessary before the individual can go "solo" -- that is fly the aircraft by themselves sans instructor.

Since 9/11, a new requirement has arisen and that is to ascertain that the new student is indeed a citizen of the United States.

Foreign-born are still able to join the learning process, but permission has to be granted by higher-ups in the Department of State. That investigative process is overseen by the Transportation Security Agency better known as TSA.

For the native born, we lowly flight instructors are required to examine a person's birth certificate and photo ID. Only then can we endorse that student's log book, "I have examined a legal birth certificate and an official photo ID and have ascertained that this individual is a native-born citizen of the United States of America" signed, certified, and dated.

We make the same notation in our own log book or certain other permanent record. Our instructions include the caveat that the birth certificate must be "official" and it is specifically stated that the student's mother, obviously present at the birth, cannot vouch for the student's legal status!

Going through that little process recently an individual commented that it is interesting that our President would not be qualified to learn to fly as he refuses to allow anyone to see his own birth certificate!

I wonder -- nah, never happen!

That is the way I saw it.

I am in NO way defending Obama, however I believe he is a natural born citizen of the United States.

A scanned image of the birth certificate can be seen here:

If it was falsified, then someone from the state of Hawaii would have let it be known.

Comparing the burning of two planes to the deaths of humans is a bit over the top. If you think planes are on the same level as human life, you need to get out more. imo

Dick

Were in the world do you get your information? Our President HAD to present a valid birth certificate to be placed on the ballot. It is time this rumor is put to bed. It is republican bull$*%# propaganda and it is gettin VERY OLD. Find something else to gripe about or SHUT UP!!!!

It is sad to see the planes be destroyed....but it in no way had any thing to do with our president. It was probably pilot error. Place blame (if it really needs to be placed on any one) where it belongs. Accidents happen! Mistakes are made every day.

Dick...please come join us common sense thinkers in the real world. If you continue to make these kinds of claims then you are part of the problem...not part of the solution

Peace

Karen, I am sorry, but you do err. President Obama did not show his Birth-certificate, no not to anyone, yet, or the Liberal News would have long ago proven those concerned, about it, wrong.

You really should learn to allow all Americans their point of view, especially if you insist on having yours. If someone you disagree with cannot voice opinion, you no longer have an opinion to disagree with. Life could be very boring then.

So you don't think they verified his birth certificate then? You don't think the state of Hawaii had his records on file?

-- Posted by blueCollarWorker on Wed, Jul 28, 2010, at 8:41 AM

BCW Yep. If someone had seen it, why would the Pres spend almost two million trying to make sure no one sees it? I cannot vouch for the exact numbers, but trust the News source that quoted them. Nuff-Said.

Dick looked at that plane like some people would look at a fancy corvette or rolls royce being burned down to nothing but the shell. Just how politically correct do we have to be these days? You actually think he's putting the value of a plane on the same level of human life? It's an exaggeration to convey a point that's similiar to what I've heard about cars, old building and pets but they don't value them equal to human life despite making the comparison. Jeesh, common sense, people.

Navy blue

You and your suppressive christisan retoric stops far more people from expressing their opinions than my asking you all to join us in the real world and think for YOUR SELVES!!!!!!!!!

If OUR PRESIDENT didnt produce a valid birth certificae then he would have not gotten as far as he has into the politic enviroment that he has!!!!Let it go! You cant change this now!!! Deal with today and tommarow. JOIN US REASONABLE PEOPLE OR GO THE WAY OF THE DINASOUARS!!!! Your choice. I didnt vote for him but I can roll with the punches and work for a better tommarow....can you??????

Mr. Dick

You and your GOP brotheren in Iowa need to get together, cause one of you is wrong, well probably both of you.

The GOP'ers in Iowa are wanting to strip President Obama of his CITIZENSHIP for accepting the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Iowa GOP is calling for reintroduction and ratification of the original 13th Amendment. It said you could not accept/receive any presents, prizes, (among other things) from any foreign power, etc.

It was not ratified by all 13 states in 1810. Never became part of the Constitution. They want to try again.

Interesting that they want to take away his citizenship that you and the other birthers claim he doesn't have. So which is it?

Have you sent the Gazette a copy of your formal invitation to the President for the flying lesson?

So they can publish it for all of us to see!

This "wag" would love to see it.

Perhaps the invitation is as mystical as your and the other birthers claim that he doesn't have a valid birth certificate.

I'm almost hesitant to post this, because honestly the more people cling to this complete fabrication, the less credibility they have in the eyes of the general public. That being said, for anyone who still cares about the actual truth:

And for those who will try to assert that factcheck.org is another one of those 'liberal' media mongers, please take 30 seconds to view the About Us link at the bottom of the page, not to mention the abundance of other articles fact-checking members on both the left and right.

The birth certificate is a small part of the debate if you follow the multiple law suits the White House (Obama) has blocked that have tried to subpeona the "long form" birth information regarding the president. In the state of Hawaii all that was needed at the time to acquire a "birth certificate" is one parent stating you were born there. No hospital or Doctors information has ever been released regarding the president and it is believe he obtained the "birth certificate" falsely. Why would he block subpoenas for the long form? The count was at seven blocked by the White House last spring.
