Upsets in first round of Cubs Division baseball tourney

Several upsets highlighted first-round action Thursday, July 8, in the McCook Midget Baseball Association's Cubs Division Tournament.

The post-season tournament for players entering grades 5-7 next fall is being played at Felling Field.

The ninth-seeded Collicott Taxidermy Orioles topped eighth-seed Janssen-Kool Honda Mets, 13-4. The Orioles advance to second-round action Friday at 5:30 p.m. against top-seeded D & T Electric Yankees.

Tenth-seeded 1300 KBRL Royals pulled off a big upset Thursday with a 14-7 win over the seventh-seeded Miller & Associate Rockies. The Royals capitalized on a 10-run first inning. The Royals advance to Friday's 8:30 p.m. showdown with the second-seeded McCook Clinic Braves.

In a tight battle in Thursday night's other first-round action, the sixth-seeded J.M. Stevens Painting Red Sox beat the McCook National Bank Astros, 3-2. The Red Sox advance to play the McCook Community Hospital Cardinals Friday at 7 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament continues all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon, July 10-11, culminating with the championship game Sunday at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. if necessary.

The Cubs Division All-Star Game is scheduled for Monday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Felling Field. The all-star teams were selected by a vote of the league's players and coaches.
