LINCOLN, Nebraska -- Tofy John Toomey, 93, formerly of Arapahoe, died on Wednesday (July 7, 2010). He was born on Dec. 1, 1916, in Kearney to Lebanese immigrants George and Katie (Abood) Shada. The family lived in Kearney until George died during the flu pandemic of 1918. His mother then remarried to William Toomey, another Lebanese immigrant. He was raised on a farmstead in Gosper County north of Arapahoe.
On Jan. 17, 1945, he married Marie Elizabeth Esslinger in Norton, Kansas. Briefly, the couple farmed near Lexington, and then moved to a farm, north of Arapahoe.
In 1980, they retired from the farm. Their first retirement home was in Elwood, followed by homes in Kearney and then Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie on Aug. 20, 2004; brother, Jimmy; two sisters, Sadie Conyers and Margaret Smith; and one son-in-law, Robert Denny.
Survivors include his daughters, Lorraine Denny of Seward, Nebraska, Carolyn and husband, Roger Eschliman of Lincoln, Jane Toomey of Sargent, Nebraska; four sisters, Lucille White of Medford, Oregon, Louise Jones of Corona, California, Dorothy Vickland of Thornton, Colorado, and Darlene Toomey of Denver, Colorado; brother, Amen Toomey of Modesto, California; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe with the Rev. Philip Vreeland officiating. Burial will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery.
Viewing and visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and prior to the service on Monday.
