McCOOK, Nebraska -- A son of Ireland, Matthew Augustine "Matt" Mooney, 67, of McCook died Thursday (July 1, 2010) at his home, in McCook, surrounded by family.

Matt was born May 11, 1943, to Matthew and Mary Ryan Mooney in Farnane, Cappamore, County Limerick, Ireland, where he grew up. Always the independent spirit, Matt moved to England as a teenager, where the seeds of a professional life of entrepreneurism were cultivated.

In March of 1964, Matt married Christine Irene Coffey in London, England. The couple welcomed three sons to their family before moving to North Platte, Nebraska, in 1977. Irene Mooney died in 1989.

In 1993, Matt moved to McCook with Beverly "Bev" Schwartz, a business person herself, who Matt came to know as the love of his life. Matt and Bev were owners of Overtime Lounge at the time of his death. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing pool and was a member of several pool leagues and the Eagles Club.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; his dear sister, Eileen Dempsey and her husband, Pat; a sister-in-law, Eileen Mooney; and a brother-in-law, Martin Collins.

Matt is survived by Beverly; his three sons and their families: Paul, Emily, Madigan Blair and Quin Matthew McClelland; Michael, Brannon and Aedan Claire; and Niall, Leslie, Abigail Irene and Noah Patrick; two sisters, Peggy Collins, and Mary and husband, Pat Hynan, all of Cappamore, Ireland; three brothers, Mike and wife, Linda Mooney of North Platte; Pat and wife, Linda Mooney of Apollo Beach, Florida; and John and wife, Helena Mooney of Cappamore; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook. Burial will be in his homeland of Ireland.

Rosary services are today at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Visitation will be today until 7 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5--7 p.m.
