Fireworks ordinances in effect

Friday, June 25, 2010

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The window for the retail sale of fireworks within the city of McCook is not yet open, but individuals may legally discharge them as of June 23 and do so until July 5, according to city ordinance.

While it may be legal for citizens to discharge fireworks, McCook Fire Chief, Mark Harpham reminds citizens to think safety first and remember it is still possible to receive a citation for disturbing the peace. "I hope the above average moisture we've received this year doesn't cause complacency and we can continue the trend we have been on for the last several years." Harpham said incidents in the past few years have been minimal and typically easily controlled fires, such as those started in trash dumpsters.

Legal hours for citizens to discharge fireworks are 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., extending to 11:59 p.m. on July 4 and July 5. Retailers may begin selling fireworks Monday, June 28, through July 4, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
