McCOOK, Nebraska -- One of the Heartland's proudest accomplishments -- the 1942 scrap metal drive -- is the subject of a documentary film which will premiere Saturday night at the Fox Theatre in McCook.

The showing begins at 7:30 p.m.

No admission will be charged, however, free will donations will be accepted for the Fox Theatre renovation project. In addition, food item donations will be accepted for the McCook Pantry.

The film, titled "Scrappers: How the Heartland Won World War II," features the 1942 Nebraska Scrap Metal Drive that supported the World War II war effort. The 1942 Scrap Metal Drive was a monumental event in Nebraska's history, bringing together Nebraska's residents for a common cause and ultimately playing a part in changing the course of World War II for the United States.

"Scrappers" was produced by Nebraska native and Seton Hall University professor James Kimble and his colleague, Thomas Rondinella.

The producers have partnered with Nebraska Life magazine to coordinate the statewide film premiere. Post-production work and other expenses are being sponsored, in part, by the Nebraska Humanities Council. In addition to McCook, the "Scrappers" film will be shown in Norfolk, Lincoln, Omaha, Kearney, Alliance and Scottsbluff.

"The Fox is honored to to chosen as one of the premiere sites," said Gene O. Morris, executive director of the McCook theatre.

Both producers will be present at the event and will be available for a question and answer session with the public following the film. Those who participated in the 1942 Scrap Metal Drive are encouraged to attend and will be recognized at the Saturday night showing.

  • I hope the people of McCook and the surrounding area realize the significance of The Fox being 1 of only 7 theatres...anywhere...to premier this movie!

My Dad and my grandparents told me stories about the scrap-metal drive (along with the paper drives, rubber drives, etc) that America did during WW-II. It makes me wonder if the people of this great nation would be able to do as well today if the need existed.

A BIG thank you to the people of the Fox for arranging for this to be screened in McCook, and for making it affordable for families to attend!
