Bison tennis girls have rough outings in Kearney

KEARNEY -- The McCook High School girls tennis team ran into a pair of rugged opponents in Kearney Tuesday, April 27.

The Bison girls lost varsity matches to Kearney High School and Kearney Catholic by identical 7-2 counts.

"The girls played hard and put forth a great effort, but they ran into better teams," said McCook head coach Matt Wiemers. "Both Kearney and Kearney Catholic are deep and experienced. I was please with the level of play of the girls, as they all elivated their game. These will be the two toughest teams we will face until we get to state."

McCook's two match wins against Kearney High came in singles competition, as Kelsey O'Dea in No. 2 singles and Danielle Barenberg in No. 6 singles convincing victories.

Kaylee Samway had a strong effort later in the day against Kearney Catholic. Samway won her No. 5 singles match, then she teamed with Danielle Barenberg for McCook's other match win at No. 2 doubles. Coach Wiemers said the doubles win was huge for Samway and Barenberg.

"Their win will prove to be big in the seeding process for state," Wiemers said. "The girls hit the open spot when they needed to to close out the match. They work well together and are continuing to improve with each match."

Wiemers said several matches against Kearney Catholic were close, but the scores did not play out in McCook's favor.

"Laura (Brooks) and Brooke (Burton) lost their (singles) matches in a tie-breaker," Wiemers said. "They both worked hard to push their matches into a tie-breaker, but they had a hard time making any type of a run. It was awesome to see them compete and make the most of the opportunity they had."

The McCook coach said it is crucial that his team members put the Kearney losses behind them and get prepared to host a solid Holdrege team Thursday.

Holdrege here Thursday

The Bison girls have their final home match of the season Thursday, April 29, against Holdrege. Matches will be held at the Senior High School courts and the Elks courts just east of the high school starting at 4 p.m.

McCook also travels to Alliance Friday, April 30, for matches against the host Bulldogs and Scottsbluff starting at 3 p.m. CDT.
