Tea party rally

Tuesday, April 20, 2010
Cars and trucks honk in approval as Tea Party supporters wave American flags and signs ranging from "Don't Tread on Me" to "Thanks, Barack, We're Baroke." Organizers said they picked Monday because it was the anniversary of the battles at Lexington and Concord. About 60 turned out for the two-hour rally. (Bruce Crosby/McCook Daily Gazette)

  • It is SO wrong to have children at things like this. They really don't know why they are there! Bad and irresposible parenting!

  • I feel it teaches the kids that we are a democracy and we have the freedom to voice our concerns with our government. If I had been able to go I would have brought my kids along. I feel it is a good civics lesson as well and getting them involved in knowing what is happening currently in our country.

  • Yes wally, the children need to be taught to shut up and do what the government tells them...just like the dear old USSR.

Next time I feel the need to educate my children about something, I'll be sure to seek out your opinion first.

  • Unfortunately (unlike the children) I don't think wally understands why anybody is there.

  • Awful lot of white people here....

  • ...and it looks like the lady with the "Stop Tyranny Now America" sing looks like she's flipping off traffic. Maybe she's just mad that she missed a comma in her sign.

  • "Awful lot of white people here...."

Yes Billyjb, because we all know that nothing good comes from a group of "white" people. You represent exactly what is wrong with the liberals today...insinuate racism of an entire group by making a blatantly racist comment yourself.

McCook is 98% white, did you expect something different? Maybe we should have had some minorities bused in from elsewhere to improve our credibility, huh?

Maybe the lady with the "sing" is upset that you don't know how to spell sign.

  • I don't think I have ever seen a code pink rally that wasn't "all white" either? Or kind of like Obamas Cabinet mostly All white too.

  • WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not about race. This is about a country who is up in arms about an administration who is threatening to take away many of our freedoms and liberties. This is about standing up for our rights and expressing our displeasure at what is going on. This is about getting people to get involved, to vote, to tell their representatives how they feel about legislation that is going to change the way we live.

I can proudly say I have voted in every presidential, state and local election since I turned 18 and will continue to do so. I can proudly say I am reading, listening and learning about the issues facing our county, state and country. I hope that more people start doing the same!!!

This is NOT ABOUT RACE. This is about getting our country heading back in the right direction. The way our forefathers intended.

  • Hehe, well played Huskers.

  • What freedoms has the government really taken away? Taxes are going up, we all knew that would have to happen to pay for the wars.

We have to hold health insurance. Most of us would have it anyways.

Don't get me wrong, we have issues. We need to get spending under control. Perhaps sell bonds to Americans to pay off the bonds held by other companies.

But are we honestly much worst off now then with the previous president?

  • can we get a list of the freedoms taken away?

-- Posted by president obama on Thu, Apr 22, 2010, at 8:59 PM
  • I have not lost any freedom, what have other people lost? I know he is not perfect, but other than the health care bill what has he done that makes eveyone so upset?

  • Denial must be a peaceful place.

    -- Posted by susanne_1989 on Thu, Apr 22, 2010, at 10:37 PM
  • Susanne, bring me out of denial, what freedoms have we lost?

-- Posted by npwinder on Fri, Apr 23, 2010, at 12:15 AM
  • You didn't read my comment right. I said threatening to take away freedoms. This article was about Americans exercising their right to express their displeasure with things that are happening. Something a lot of Americans are afraid are going to be taken away.

  • All due respect McCook Gal, npwinder and bigdawg...you aren't really paying attention to what is going on in Washington. Your freedoms aren't disappearing overnight, they are disappearing with each piece of legislation, with each buyout and "stimulus" package, with each bought senator and congressman.

How do you feel about the government owning wall street, automobile dealerships, insurance, investment, and banking companies? How do you feel about closed door deals in order to pass legislation that the majority of Americans do not want? How do you feel about our elected representatives giving themselves different benefits than the ones they deem appropriate for the rest of Americans (i.e. Health Insurance, Social Security, etc.)? How do you feel about calling people that voice their concerns, "nazi's" or "racist"?

Has capitalism become such a dirty word that we are throwing out the very way of life that built this country into the great place it is, that we are willing to become Europe 2? Is socialism really where we want to be? Has this great country fallen so far that we seriously striving to be more like Canada, France, or Spain?

One day our children will talk about our generation being responsible for all their taxes and debt. They will not know of the "freedoms" that you had back at the turn of the century...the freedoms to work in the private sector, to keep what they earn, to give where they choose...they will blame us.

"Oh you Americans! You're so gullible! We'll spoon feed you socialism until you're Communists and don't even know it. We'll never have to fire a shot!" - Soviet Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev

The Tea Party movement is about taking back ownership of your country. Republican or Democrat, we all need to expect more out of our elected officials. They represent us, not the other way around.

  • could I get a list of the freedoms they are threatening to take away? Perhaps you could reference pending legislation.

-- Posted by president obama on Fri, Apr 23, 2010, at 12:32 PM
  • those are worries not freedoms. You worry about those things. I dont think that makes them freedoms.

  • First of all Husker23 I have a son that has been in the Air Force for 6 years, so I am very aware of all the government bullsh@t. I also believe that this world is already confusing enough for children, so why introduce anymore sh#t in their world. They will have to deal with this crap soon enough. I wonder, if I would have asked the little kids why they were there, what would their answer be. I think the answer would be, "My mom/dad brought me here". I live in Fl and when people were picketing outside Casey Anthony's house,(the mom that "allegedly" killed her daughter) there were many parents that thought it was alright to have their children there holding signs calling her a baby killer etc.... Do you really think those children had a clue what was really happening. Children should not have to be involved with the sign waving or deal with the adult issues! Let them be kids!

  • Bailouts....have you not heard that GM and other auto dealers have been paying them back?? Some in full...and huskers1, I truely hope that with you not buying insurance you never get to the place that your hospital bills are over what you can pay, because if that happens then that effects my freedom before our government even gets involved, not paying doctors is the reason the health care system is so overpriced to begin with.

-- Posted by McCook Gal on Sat, Apr 24, 2010, at 5:38 PM
  • List of freedomes? How about these?

    - Freedom to invest in the companies that you want to invest in. Instead, you now own GM, AIG, and a few other companies. Or how about the freedom to spend money the government took from you the way you want to spend it. Or, perhaps you really believe the government is smarter than you about what your money is best used for.

    - Come 2014, you will have lost the freedom to choose what to buy. Instead, the government will tell you that you must buy health insurance or face a penalty. That is because the government has decided they know what is best for you again. You will no longer have the freedom of choosing what to use your money for in the marketplace. You will no longer have a choice between living life on the edge without health insurance or buying a policy.

    - The freedom to engage in free speech w/out the whitehouse asking your friends to report you on a special website.

Now, haven't we lost enough? If not, the proposed Immigration Act that will require everybody to have a national ID card will take away plenty more. Paramount, will be any expectation of privacy you currently have.

  • Who says you cant invest money in companys of your choosing? The government tell me that I have to buy car insurance to license my car, is that a good idea? Do you have the website adress where people are being reported? Saying there is one and there actually being one are different.
