New paving process planned

A new, environmentally-friendly way to resurface streets is scheduled for Elizabeth Lane this year.

The McCook City Council approved bid specifications for this project, along with other street improvements slated for this year, at the regular meeting Monday night.

The bids are being let as two separate contracts; the asphalt paving contract and the Elizabeth Lane Reconstructing Contract. For both contracts, the bidder will specify a completion date.

For Elizabeth Lane, the existing asphalt will be pulverized in place on the street, instead of hauling it off and having to dispose of it. Then, emulsion will be added and the mixture will be compacted back onto the street.

Under the asphalt contract, several streets in McCook will be resurfaced, including West Fifth from B to J Street; one block each of West F, Sunset and West I, West M from Westridge to 10th, the north three blocks of Norris Avenue and a drain repair on East H and Sixth.

The road in front of the lower shelter house in Kelley Park also will be patched and resurfaced with new asphalt. To slow down traffic in the area, a painted crosswalk with stop signs south of the shelter house will be installed, along with parking blocks to protect the walking trail.
