HERNDON -- Laurence L. Escher, 87, formerly of Herndon, died Thursday (March 4, 2010), at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin.
He was born March 29, 1922, to Rosa Barenberg Escher and Louis Escher. He grew up in Herndon and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic Grade School and Hendon Rural High School.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. After the war he returned to Herndon.
On Feb. 7, 1950, he married Loretta (Retsy) Amelia Huss at St. Mary's Church. He was the sole proprietor of Escher's Retail Liquor Store in Herndon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Retsy; his parents; and two brothers, Francis and Herman.
Survivors include his children, Patricia Scheve and husband, Terry of Hays, Kan., Rita Escher and husband, Steve Simon of Reno, Nev., David Escher and wife, Deb of Reno, Nev., Jerome Escher and wife, Debbie of McCook; his sister, Rosemary Bates and husband, Jerome of Aurora, Colo.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Stephen Foloruson officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.
A Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited today, 7 p.m., at the church.
Visitation was today, 1-4:30 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood and after 6 p.m., at the church.
Memorials may be given in his name to the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Herndon or Good Samaritan Center, Oberlin.
