ARAPAHOE -- Mary L. Slocum, 67, died Sunday (Feb. 28, 2010) at the Cambridge Hospital, in Cambridge.
She was born April 1, 1942, in Shreveport, La., to Samuel and Mary S. (Austin) Harrison. She attended school in Shreveport.
She married Edward Slocum in 1983. She was a stay at home mother raising and caring for her family. Once her children were grown, she went on to cosmetology school. She owned her own salon in Orleans, Nebraska called Je'Mars. After retiring, she lived in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas to be close to her children and grandchildren. In 2002, she moved to Arapahoe.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, in Arapahoe, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Slocum; her parents; one son, George Jerry Hall; and daughter-in-law, Jessica Chapman Peterson.
Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy and husband, Clifton Hudson of Kearney, Mary and husband, Toby tenBensel of Holbrook, Carol and husband, Doug Brown of Arapahoe, Shelley and husband, David Harshbargar of Norton, Kan.; one son, Chad Peterson of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Herbert and wife, Lindale Lindsey of Waco, Texas and Sammy Harris of Shreveport, La.; one sister, Doris and husband, Doyle Chism of Shreveport, La; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Michael Flury officiating. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, at Beaver City.
Viewing and visitation will be Wednesday, 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and prior to the service at the church.
