Four Huskers coming to town Friday on FCA Tour

Wednesday, February 3, 2010
Four members of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team will make an appearance in McCook Friday night as part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Husker Tour 2010.

Former Chase County High School standout Matt May has another conflict, but May might show up for the event. Other Husker players expected to attend Friday night include standout running back Rex Burkhead, offensive lineman Marcel Jones, and defensive safety Eric Hagg.

The Husker players will greet the public and give a presentation at the McCook Senior High School gym Friday night immediately following the McCook-Ogallala boys basketball game.

The Husker players will discuss their religious faith and beliefs and how that plays out on the field for each of them. The presentation is open to the public free of charge.

May is a 6-1, 215-pound junior linebacker for the Huskers. FCA coordinator Nate Lewis said May made a commitment to appear in McCook, then later realized that his brother Tyler, a member of the University of Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team, is competing in his final home meet of the season for the Lopers Friday night in Kearney. Lewis said May will try and make it to McCook for the Husker football presentation late Friday night following the UNK wrestling meet.

Burkhead, a former Texas high school star, emerged as a key player in the NU offensive attack in his first season in Lincoln last fall. The 5-11, 200-pound running back was one of the leaders in Nebraska's 33-0 win over Arizona last December in the Holiday Bowl. Jones, a 6-7, 310-pound junior-to-be, started in the offensive line last fall. Hagg, a 6-2, 205-pound senior-to-be, was a key player at safety for the NU defense.

Lewis said several other Nebraska players may also join in the presentation Friday.

The event will open with local kids invited to join the Husker players for a short football game in the Senior High gym. Each Husker player will then talk to the crowd about their individual stories about their relationship with Jesus Christ and how that carries over to the football field. The players and other officials will explain the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization. The Husker players will be available for autographs and conversations with the crowd at the conclusion of Friday night's program.
