Jobs Key to Growth
The President pointed out not only the problems he inherited, but what we can do to get out of the problems we're in. Clearly, employment and jobs are going to be a big part of it. We need to make sure that our taxes are appropriate, deductions are available for small businesses to expand, and that we can export more of our products. That's a very important part of making sure that our economy will strengthen over time and that there will be more jobs here at home. Whether it's agricultural products or other manufactured products, the more we export the more jobs we'll support here at home.
Hold the Line on Spending
The President made it very clear that spending must come down and that if Congress gets out of control with spending, he'll use his veto pen. I applaud his focus on reducing spending. As a former Nebraska governor, I vetoed legislation and spending when I thought the Legislature had exceeded its bounds and I hope the President will hold true to that promise. I hope it's not necessary, but if it is, I hope he'll do it.
I also support the spending freeze. It could save $250 billion in the next 10 years, which would help cut the deficit. This one step alone can't get us out of the budget hole we're in -- but as I've always said, the first thing you do when you find yourself in a hole is to stop digging. As the Chairman of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee, which handles the spending bill that funds the operations of Congress, the Capitol security force and the investigative arm of Congress, I will do my part to hold spending down and make sure that Congress tightens its belt, just like families across Nebraska. It's one way I can personally make sure that spending stays restrained.
Americans Want Congress to Work Together
I also think the President made it clear it's time for us to come together. The people across America -- and I know in Nebraska it's true -- are tired of the bickering and the fighting and the partisanship. We really do need to move beyond the partisan divide. That kind of reaching out to Republicans and Democrats alike is extremely important for the future of this country.
It's a very difficult challenge ahead and things are not going to turn around overnight, but I'm encouraged. To turn around our economy and to create jobs, it's going to require bipartisanship. It's going to require people working together and less division across this country. I look forward to working with members of both parties to help keep our country on the right track.

Isn't it amazing how one man has the power to create and destroy jobs by the flick of a switch.
What's more amazing is how an educated man, like Ben, can easily be duped into believing that is true. That or he is lying through his teeth.
The fact of the matter is that one man or even a team of men cannot get together and figure out how to create jobs. Unless Obama is going to start a business, a profitable one, and hire millions of people to do something productive that no one was doing before, there is no way he can "create" a job.
What's really depressing to me is how mant Americans are ignorant enough to believe our government can actually do this and they are really sitting around waiting for it to happen.
The best thing we could do for jobs right now is fire the entire 3 branches of federal government and let the states govern themselves for a few decades. The sheer magnitude of no government spending in the federal offices would be a huge boon to the economy.
The notion that the president thinks he is going to double exports over ANY amount of years is laughable at best. Just the fact that he's so into raising taxes on corperate businesses, capping corperate pay, regulating profits alone means that NO ONE is going to want to make anything here they could easily make in China or Mexico.
Then you throw in the EPA and it's sweeping powers that rival the excecutive branch's power to pull the plug on ANY manufacturer it wants.
I want a clean planet as much as anyone.
At some point we as a people are going to have to realize that there is just only so much room for so many people. There is only so much of a particular natural resource for so many people. There is a point where you tax business/industry to a point where they are going elsewhere and you have accomplished solving one problem while creating anothter on.
What America has created is an enlightened society where we are champions of saving plants, animals, and land from becoming spoils of profit. We have in turn eliminated millions of jobs and sent trillions of dollars to foreign markets through imports. Virtually everything we buy is made in China.
While we are cleaning this place up and boosting profits for some, we have reduced our capacity of to produce anything for ourselves, let alone other countries. We also want to keep making money and spending money, but we keep sending out money to China and the Middle East, as well as our jobs.
The economy is coming back, but the jobs aren't. It's no surprise.
We were living in a false economy where we had quite a number of people working and making money and of course everyone was spending money faster than they were making it and this was spreading money around fast. It didn't last. Miuch like Bernie Madoff's scam had to come full circle at some point and people would catch him.
What saddens me is that none of these educated idiots in DC are ever going to come out tell the truth about our situation. No one is going to admit we've painted ourselves in a hole. There is simply no escape frome what we have created.
We cannot even tariff foreign exports to make up some trade difference because are so beholden to the ones who hold our debt.
At some point we are going to have to take a step back and realize that our way of living is not sustainable when we want to have most all Americans working and paying fair taxes. Right now we have too much money going overseas for everything we don't or can't manufacture here. We are buying up too much foreign energy and in a way we are helping to fund our own terrorists nemises in the Middle East.
What I would like to see is Americans be more aware of what we are buying and try to buy American made products. I'm sick of buying Chinese made crap!
I went to buy Red Wings boots last year, some of them are made in the USA, some are made in China! China! My new Moen faucets ares made in the USA!
We need to be tell these companies that saving $10 is not as important to us anymore. We want our jobs back, that is what should be important to us now.
The reason no one is hiring is because we have been afraid of this new budget. Higher taxes and higher taxes and higher taxes. People will not hire until they see how high taxes will go.
This is a jobless recovery and will remain so until this President stops attacking and threatening every business that exists.
Right now he is only attacking:
Hospitals, Drug companies, Medical device makers, Banks, Insurance companies, Oil Companies, Finacial companies. He has also attacked Tobacco companies.
That is a big part of the hiring population. And all those industries are on the Obama hit list!
He's actually attacking anyone who is out to make a profit. Like I'm busting my hump to make life better for other people with all the pitfalls of owning my own business!
I can't believe someone can be in such a high office, and be so campletely stupid. To actually want to punish ANY large corperation for making good profits. Don't they need to make money for their shareholders if for no one else? If not for the shareholders would there be any way of raising capital to invest if you were a large corperation?
If you could not attract new stockholders, you'd be done.
They've attacked yacht builders because of the wealthy clientel these companies have. Yet these companies that hire workers to build them pay $20/hr. They also outsource components for these big boats from over 1000 different companies.
If you think that's a bad deal, then there is just no place for you in a free market democracy.
We are all so connected in this economy and if you don't understand that, you need to go back to highschool and take a basic economics class.
What the president is doing is playing class warfare to get the middle class riled up to hate the rich and beg him to take their money.
If that's not the most sophmoric assinine way to be president than I don't know what is.
Then the dopes like Nelson follow into this like rank-and-file dodo birds.
And Wallis,
There is more to this than just attacking big business for the lack of job recovery. There just are not any jobs because there is no need.
We had too many jobs up until 2 years ago largely from the false economy of the housing boom that was fictitiously based on all the lousy loans that Freedie and Fannie were able to make at the request of congress.
Once all those jobs that are related to the house building to the 10th degree were eliminated, this is what you have. For those of you who don't get it, that would be the check-out girl at Home Depot all the way to the CEO of the bank that went under and everyone in between. And then everyone that those people did business with, like electronics stores, eateries, car dealers, clothing stores.
I'd really like to have time to explore the trade defict. The president says he's going to double exports in 5 years or something stupid like that. With what? We don't make ANYTHING in this country as it is for ourselves. We first have to make something for ourselves before we start making stuff for others. Wouldn't that be better for the environment? I mean, those container ships don't run on ocean water last time I checked. So shouldn't we make stuff at home instead of shipping half the stuff we make away and ship the other half we need back in?
I seriously think there's a huge problem with the reality of what he's saying. Not to mention the fact that who in the world is going to buy what we're makeing and exporting? China? Does this guy even think about what he's saying?
I wonder also if he is really the president. Is the real president typing away on the telepromters so the president can have words to come out of his mouth? If you need those things to talk to 20 people, is it really you talking?
There are a lot....of disturbing things that came out of that State of the Campaign speech he made. There are some serious flaws in reality. There are some seriously fake hand clapping to eliminate waste and earmarks by people seated behind him that are maybe the worst in our country for doing with no intention of stopping it.
