Area teams struggle at Arapahoe holiday tourney

Area teams struggled in the opening round of the Arapahoe Holiday Basketball Tournament played Monday at Arapahoe High School.

Arapahoe's girls were the only Gazette area team to win Monday. The Warriors topped Sumner-Eddyville-Miller 53-50. Hitchcock County's girls dropped a 50-38 decision to Pleasanton. The Hitchcock County boys lost 59-24 to Pleasanton, and SEM topped Arapahoe's boys 60-42.

The Arapahoe girls rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to advance to Tuesday's championship game. SEM led 29-22 at intermission.

The Warriors were led by Makayla Wendland with 14 points and Cayla Polston with 11. Megan Berg had 18 points for SEM.

Arapahoe made 11 of 18 free throws, while SEM was 7 of 17 at the line.

Pleasanton's girls broke open a tight game with Hitchcock County in the third quarter. Hitchcock County led 16-13 at halftime, but Pleasanton outscored the Falcons 25-9 in the third period to build a 38-25 cushion.

Laramie Lewis led Hitchcock County with 16 points. Pleasanton was paced by Ashley Axmann with 19 points.

Boys games

In boys action, Pleasanton outscored Hitchcock County 20-4 in the opening quarter and the Falcons never recovered.

Pleasanton led 31-10 at intermission and 47-14 after three quarters.

"We played hard and had some opportunities to score during the game, but Pleasanton was senior-laden and executed very well throughout the game," said Hitchcock County head coach Mike Tines. "We were short-handed but still compete to the end."

Cole Brown had 8 points to lead Hitchcock County. Austin Forbes had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for the Falcons, and Clive Brown added 5 points, 5 rebounds and 6 steals.

Pleasanton was led by Trent Pritchard with 12 points.

Arapahoe's boys also fell behind early against SEM and the Warriors could never battle back. SEM led 22-9 after one quarter. The Mustangs held their biggest lead at 49-28 early in the fourth quarter.

Nikola Maric topped Arapahoe with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Garth Walbridge added 10 points and 5 assists. Leading scorer for SEM was Dylan smith with 17 points.

Tuesday's finals

Arapahoe and Pleasanton meet Tuesday evening for first place in the girls division. Hitchcock County and SEM's girls play for third place Tuesday afternoon.

Pleasanton and SEM play Tuesday night for the championship in the boys division. Hitchcock County and Arapahoe's boys square off Tuesday afternoon for third place.
