WAUNETA - Gladys Leona Schaffer, 72, died Monday (Nov. 16, 2009) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.

She was born Jan. 7, 1937, at Grant, Neb., the daughter of the late Edward W. and Gladys M. (Pollard) Pankonin. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Grant where she received her high school education.

On Jan. 26, 1958, she married Joseph J. Schaffer at the Lutheran Church in Wauneta, Neb. They made their home at Wauneta before moving to Julesburg, Colo. They moved to Greeley, Colo. before returning to Wauneta. In 1975 they moved to Grant, where she was preceded in death by her husband in 1978.

At the time of her death she was a resident of Wauneta.

She was a life member of the VFW Auxillary.

She is survived by one daughter, Fern Stanton and husband, Tom of Culbertson, Neb., one son, Edward Schaffer and wife, Cat of Central City Neb., two brothers, Jim Pankonin and wife, Joyce of Imperial, Neb., and Dick Pankonin of Minitare, Neb., and one sister, Mattie Barrett of Oberlin, Kan., seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, Neb., with the Rev. Ronald Krause officiating. Inurnment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Grant.

Memorials may be given in her name and addressed to the family at 71733 Road 379, at Culbertson, NE, 69024.
