McCook Christian Church plans concert, mother-daughter retreat

Elissa Leander, left, and her sister, Becca, are coming to McCook Christian Church, 507 West B Street, Nov. 21 to present a Mother-Daughter retreat from 11 a.m.-4:45 p.m. After the retreat, the award winning Christian artists will appear in concert at 7 p.m.

The Sonflowerz, a British-American sister act from Colorado, is coming to McCook Nov. 21, appearing in concert at McCook Christian Church, 507 W. B Street, at 7 p.m.

When asked about the upcoming event, Becca Leander said, "We are excited to come back to McCook! We're encouraging all moms and daughters to join us on Saturday before the concert. It will be a fun time to hang out as just girls for the day. The theme for the retreat is 'Face the Son,' and it goes perfectly with why we're called 'The Sonflowerz' -- to face the Son of God and follow him with our lives. We have just finished a new project, 'Beautiful Miracle,' a Christmas album. The concert on the 21st will be our first live performance of these songs."

Elissa and Becca Leander formed Sonflowerz in 1999, with encouragement from Elissa's youth pastor. They released their first album "You Remain" in 2002, followed by "Alive in You," in 2005 and "All over the World" in 2008, which feature No. 1 singles "My Adoration," "Edge of My Seat," "Legacy" and "More than I Think I am."

Produced by 6-time Dove Award winner Don Koch, "All Over the World" is a collection of songs that Worship Leader Magazine called "authentically worshipful" and "captivating vocals characterize the Sonflowerz, their heartfelt lyrics are outstanding. 'All Over The World' is a gorgeously inventive record, perhaps their strongest studio release yet."

"From the beginning of 'All Over The World,' the sisters sing of a passion for delivering God's word to the nations. But true significance comes when they slow down for songs like 'My Adoration,' which humbly celebrates the completion we find in Christ, and 'Legacy,' a song dedicated to a friend who sacrificed everything and died as a missionary in Nepal. In their honest reflections, the Sonflowerz transcend simple thanks, demonstrating a yearning for God in every form." Said Bethany Duval in a review at CBN.com.

The concert is offered in conjunction with the Mother-Daughter retreat, for mothers, grandmothers, aunts or mentors and girls fourth grade through age 18, that begins at 11 a.m., Nov. 21 at McCook Christian Church.

"During our travels in the U.S. and U.K., we've come in contact with a lot of young people who are hurting," Becca says. "More than ever, people are searching to fill a void in their hearts that can only be filled by God. We want the songs on this new record to point the way to him."

The retreat, "Face the Son," is offered for $10, which includes lunch. To register for the retreat call 345-1516.

There is no admission charge to the concert, although a free will offering will be accepted. The concert will be preceded by a dinner at 6 p.m., at the church. Reservations for dinner can be made by calling 345-1516.

The event is co-sponsored by Walmart Supercenter, Wells Fargo Bank, McCook Financial Group and First Central Bank.
