"Over the past eight years, it has been a great honor and pleasure of mine to serve on the Nebraska Public Service Commission. I enjoy doing the peoples' work and will remain an accessible, transparent Commissioner," Vap said.
"We have tremendous challenges ahead, especially in the area of technology. I will use my experience to ensure we always hold the industries accountable."
After graduating from McCook High School, Jerry Vap went on to the University of Nebraska -- Lincoln, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration. From there, he went on to have a very long and distinguished career as a public servant. He has served on many boards and committees over the years including the Board of Trustees of the National Conservation Foundation, the E911 Advisory Board, and the Nebraska Information and Technology Commission Community Council.
Vap's leadership service includes being a past President of Republican Valley Conservation Association, McCook Chamber of Commerce, McCook Rotary Club, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts and the National Association of Conservation Districts
"Growing up in McCook instilled in me the values we share as Nebraskans including service to the public, the community, and the state. My wife Sherry and I - along with our three children and their families - are proud of all that this great state has accomplished, and I look forward to continuing to serve as a Nebraska Public Service Commissioner for another term," Vap concluded.
Vap was appointed to represent District 5 of the PSC in August 2001 and elected for his first full term in November of 2004. He served as Chairman of the PSC in 2004 and 2005 and is the current Vice Chairman of PSC. There are five Commissioners elected by district to six year terms on a partisan ballot. Vap is a Republican and has been endorsed by the Nebraska Republican Party.
The constitutional powers and duties of the Public Service Commission include rate and service regulation, as well as the general control of all common carriers engaged in the transportation of household goods or passengers for hire or furnishing communication services for hire in Nebraska intrastate commerce. The Commission is composed of its Transportation, Communications, Grain Warehouse, Housing and Recreational Vehicle, Natural Gas, and E911 departments.

Thanks for your service Mr. Vap... It's to bad more business owners in McCook don't get involved in local politics like running for city council, county commissioners.....back in the 60-70s proud and sucessful businessmen/women in McCook wanted their voices heard but today they are afraid of losing a customer if he votes against a customer wishes... no guts to do whats right??? Then we get employees of the county running the county as a commissioner ......only in RedWillow...and recent high schoolers graduates with no college running city council with no financial understandings of debt/common sense......
The experience and maturity Jerry brings to to job is invaluable. Thanks for running again.
Jlake,
You seem to have all the answers and know so much about the City of McCook. Why don't you run?
